Are you interested in the impacts that chemicals have on our environment? We are recruiting scientists to assess information on the environmental hazards and risks posed by chemicals and contribute to plans for their management. Working closely with team colleagues and staff at the Health and Safety Executive, you will: • evaluate environmental fate, ecotoxicity and/or exposure data in chemical dossiers prepared by companies to ensure compliance (e.g. for deriving acceptable concentrations, or exposure estimates), following up where required;• review assessments prepared by non-UK regulatory bodies and draft comments explaining any changes you think need to be made, proposing alternative approaches where necessary; • develop the team’s expertise in relevant fields – such as endocrine disruption, fate and behaviour, alternatives to methods that use animals, estimating emissions of chemicals from various uses, predictive tools and modelling – through networking, reviewing academic and grey literature, and developing and managing relevant research projects; and• take responsibility for drafting sections of UK regulatory dossiers, with a particular focus on hazard identification, risk assessment and/or options analysis. You: • have a degree in a scientific discipline relevant for the environmental assessment of chemicals, for example chemistry, biology or environmental science, and understand the principles of environmental hazard and risk assessment;• have at least 3 years’ experience in a role where you applied your scientific knowledge to environmental hazard or risk assessment of chemicals;• have excellent written and oral communication skills, particularly with an ability to adapt your style to be understood by a range of audiences;• be good at paying close attention to detail, analysing complex scientific and numerical information and solving problems; • be confident in your ability to work remotely; and• have strong organisational skills (including efficient time management) to be able to meet tight deadlines and prioritise workloads. Please specifically highlight what experience you have in ecotoxicology, fate and behaviour assessment, environmental exposure and/or risk assessment of chemicals.
