We have a new permanent opportunity for a Design Engineer to join a growing team in providing technical design support to the business at Babcock. Working within the Nuclear Process Group, you will be part of the Facilities Engineering Technical Authority, responsible for delivering a Technical Authority and Design Agency function, supporting the various business units within Devonport Royal Dockyard (DRD), and Ministry of Defence (MoD) establishments. This position has flexible working arrangements with time spent remotely, office based and on-site, including in radiologically controlled areas.
Who we are looking for?
You will have an understanding of mechanical engineering principles for the design, operation and maintenance of pressure/pipework systems, or chemical engineering principles relating to process systems. You will have a background and an education in engineering to underpin this understanding but will also be willing to learn and further develop your skills. You will be given the support and means to do this while contributing to the defence capability of the UK in a fast-paced and challenging engineering environment.
What will you be doing? As a Design Engineer in the Nuclear Process Group, you will be responsible for providing technical engineering support and advice, as well as undertaking design activities relating to process engineering supporting dockyard facilities. This includes the maintenance and control of modifications to the design intent of nuclear process plant and equipment across Devonport Royal Dockyard’s Nuclear Licensed Site and the MoD’s Authorised Site.
Responsibilities will also include: •Leading or working within a team of engineers, planning and organising tasks and facilitating progress •Production of design documentation and supporting assessments, acting as lead author where appropriate •Development and delivery of designs in accordance with the design process (Start-up, Concept, Scheme, Detailed and Implementation phases) and relevant legislation •Provision of advice, as directed by line management, on the implementation and maintenance of design documentation and compliance with relevant codes, standards and legislation •Performing, and where appropriate checking, design analyses and associated activities •Representing Nuclear Process Group Technical Authority by leading on-site visits and where appropriate, providing guidance and leadership to contract staff
The experience you’ll bring You’ll have a minimum of HNC in a relevant engineering discipline and have a proven background as a Design Engineer.
We would also like you to have one or more of the following: • Knowledge of pressure systems (pipework, tanks, pumps, overpressure protection etc.) • Experience in Computer Aided Design • Experience using engineering software for stress analysis or fluid flow • Experience in nuclear plant design, operations or maintenance • Knowledge of legislation, engineering standards and design codes • Experience of having applied the whole design lifecycle.
You will need to satisfy security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.
