Eel Incident Support Officer

This is an exciting opportunity to join a high achieving national team and contribute to maintaining, improving and developing fisheries across England.We are looking for a Technical Advisor within National Monitoring Fish & Ecology - National Fisheries Services. Reporting to the Senior Technical Specialist and Eel Incident Project Manager, you will work in close partnership with Area service delivery staff, National Technical Specialists, AFNE Senior Fisheries Advisors and Asset Owners to support the National Eel Incident Response – ensuring assets are compliant with the Eels Regulations (2009) and adhere to best practice for upstream and downstream eel passage.Tasks include (but are not limited to); investigating improved elver passage solutions on gauging structures, supporting R&D on next generation pumped passes, updating the passage and screening elements of the Eel Manual, providing technical advice for notices signed under the Eels Regulations and running the Eel Incident Helpdesk. There will also be a requirement to liaise and influence external suppliers of eel passage infrastructure. We are looking for a fisheries expert with considerable experience in technical and behavioural eel screening solutions and eel passage at in-river structures. Your understanding of operational issues will be supported by good inter-personal, influencing and excellent communication skills. You must have a good understanding of eel passage challenges and novel technologies under development as well as regulatory processes, and ideally an understanding of internal asset management processes.As the successful candidate working in a dispersed team, you will be self-motivated, self-reliant and organised with excellent attention to detail.
