This is a technical role providing scientific data, assessment & advice to help Environment Agency & wider Defra Group improve the environment. The evidence you develop will inform implementation of current & future sustainable farming practices. You will:• apply scientific knowledge & experience to identify data requirements to address specific evidence needs• scope & undertake analyses of large datasets & databases, GIS & specialised software producing robust results & reports• prepare & present findings in a structured manner that can be easily accessed & understood by a wide audience• specify & manage consultant delivery of technical projects• ensure data, assessments & reports are delivered in an accurate & timely manner & perform checks to ensure accuracy To do this, you will need to:• anticipate issues (e.g. associated with quality & completeness of data), apply sound techniques to assess them & adapt approaches as necessary• make sound judgements based on complex or incomplete information &/or within limited timescales• take ownership for the quality & timeliness of your work• have excellent written & oral communication skills• work effectively both on your own & as part of a dispersed national team of specialists You will have:• a degree or equivalent experience in the natural sciences.• a strong interest in using data to examine the environment & have an enquiring mind.• experience of designing assessments to gather data & information to address specific evidence questions.• experience in working with large datasets, as well as integrating data from multiple sources, using databases & GIS tools.• An ability to convey information & ideas clearly, accurately, & persuasively through speech & writing.Experience in any of the following areas would be advantageous: • data analysis (cleansing, profiling, modelling & visualisation) using programming languages such as R, Python or SQL; developing tools & techniques to improve the efficiency & replicability of routine data processes; & developing & validating environmental models.• knowledge of environmental & agricultural management, with a good understanding of current & potential pressures on our water environment from farming activities.
