Head of UK Submarines (Mission Systems)

Amplify your impact as our new Head of UK Submarines (Mission Systems) This is a great opportunity to make an immediate impact by leading the portfolio of programmes and projects that form the UK submarines focus area within Mission System’s Launch and Handling (L&H) Capability Area. The focus area is currently delivering major items of equipment to the Dreadnought Programme and undertaking early design activities for the Astute replacement programme (SSNR). The future triparite AUKUS program also forms part of this portfolio. This is a significant leadership role, reporting directly to the L&H Director, working closely with the Head of Operations and discipline leads you will be responsible for the centralised management of the overall portfolio of programmes, projects and business development opportunities that comprise the UK submarines focus area to ensure that they meet the agreed strategic objectives. Key responsibilities will include: • Active membership of the Launch & Handling leadership team. • Monitoring, control and delivery of the UK Submarines portfolio to achieve the agreed strategic business objectives and associated profit and loss. • Management of the portfolio risks and issues • In conjunction with the Head of Operations establish and maintain effective governance arrangements • Generation and submission of portfolio performance reports identifying any deviations from plan and associated corrective action to be taken. • In conjunction with the appropriate delivery and discipline leads allocate resources to optimise the performance of the portfolio • Developing and managing effective relationships both internal and external. • Ensuring that all activities undertaken within the focus area contribute to ‘safe and secure’ Capability Area operations, including HSE, Security, Information Assurance and Business Continuity Planning (BCP). • Implementing agreed continuous improvement (CI) activities within the focus area; developing the Area’s skills and routines, integrating activates across teams, ensuring progress to plan, and overseeing benefits realisation / measurement. Who we’re looking for As a leader, collaboration and working in partnership comes naturally. You are someone who owns and delivers, who champions high performance and is courageous to challenge the status quo. You will also be self-motivated with the ability to transform complex problems into simple, elegant solutions.

Experience • Comprehensive experience of managing multiple portfolios of in the support of delivery of large and technically complex equipment/system contracts, preferably for MoD and commercial customers. • Experience in developing and implementing business cases, delivery plans and growth strategies. • Well rounded Commercial and Legal awareness. • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to interact successfully at a senior level with Babcock leadership, Commercial and MoD customers. • An understanding of military dockyard waterfront operations and strategic infrastructure management is desirable. • Domain knowledge in, and experience of, delivering programmes and projects for complex defence assets and systems to UK customers is desirable. • Proficient with MS Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel and Project desirable. • Experience of Babcock Finance and ERP systems, including IFS (or similar). Education and qualifications • Degree or equivalent qualification / experience in an appropriate production, engineering or management discipline. • Holds a recognised project management qualification such as APM PMQ or equivalent • Holds, or capable of achieving, Chartered project professional (ChPP) registration or equivalent. • NEBOSH Health and Safety or equivalent (desirable). • IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent. Attributes • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; the ability to influence and enforce strategic conclusions. • Excellent organisational skills. • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships at all levels. • Strong Safety based ethos with a commitment to the Babcock Purpose and Principles.
