Land Manager - Woodlands

Job at SSE in Dundee, Dundee City Council, DD2

Are you a skilled land management professional looking to make a significant impact on the operational integrity of a vital electricity network? This Land Manager opportunity with SSE's Transmission business offers a unique chance to contribute to a sustainable future while managing diverse landscapes across Scotland.

The Opportunity

SSE Transmission is seeking a dedicated Land Manager to join their Vegetation and Land Management team. This role is crucial for ensuring the smooth operation of the electrical network by overseeing the day-to-day management of non-operational landscaped and woodland areas within the company's ownership. You'll be at the forefront of integrating environmental considerations with critical infrastructure needs.

Key Responsibilities and Advantages for Candidates:

  • Strategic Environmental Integration: You will play a pivotal role in advising on and monitoring new planting schemes connected to substation capital projects. This is a chance to influence how new developments are integrated into the existing landscape, ensuring compliance with best practices and the core objectives of each scheme.
  • Proactive Woodland Management: The role involves managing the annual inspection and maintenance of young woodland areas to ensure they establish correctly and meet all design and planning requirements. This offers hands-on experience in nurturing and developing important green spaces.
  • Risk Mitigation and Assessment: Undertake professional tree inspections and woodland surveys to identify and evaluate tree risks, such as decay, disease, or structural weaknesses. This aspect of the role provides valuable experience in arboricultural assessment and proactive risk management, directly contributing to network security.
  • Sustainable Planning and Execution: Develop and manage comprehensive maintenance plans, utilizing both internal and external resources. The emphasis on delivering these plans on time, within budget, and sustainably provides an excellent opportunity to hone project management and resource allocation skills in an environmentally conscious context.
  • Stakeholder Engagement Excellence: Engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including landowners, tenants, local authorities, and national agencies. This role offers significant opportunities to develop and leverage strong negotiation skills and build valuable relationships, essential for career progression in land management and infrastructure development.
  • Career Development and Stability: This is a permanent, full-time position with a competitive salary range of £54,952 - £64,738, plus a car allowance and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your family, finances, and wellbeing. SSE is committed to investing in its people and the future, with a clear ambition to be a leading energy company in a net-zero world.
  • Geographical and Lifestyle Flexibility: With base locations in Aberdeenshire, Dundee & Angus, Highlands & Islands, Moray, or Perthshire, you have the opportunity to work in some of Scotland's most scenic regions. The role also embraces flexible working options, acknowledging the importance of a healthy work-life balance.

Key Considerations for Your Career Path:

  • Essential Qualifications and Experience: Candidates should possess a recognised Forestry or Environmental qualification (HND, BSc, or similar) and demonstrate silviculture experience. Strong knowledge of tree species, growth characteristics, and tree inspection/maintenance is vital.
  • Commitment to Safety and Reliability: A genuine commitment to maintaining a safe and reliable electricity network is paramount. This requires a diligent and responsible approach to all aspects of land management.
  • Driving Requirement: A full, current driving licence is an essential requirement for this role due to the rural nature of the operational area.
  • Adaptability: A flexible approach to work locations across SSE Transmission's operating area is necessary, reflecting the dynamic nature of the role.
  • Inclusive Environment: SSE is dedicated to fostering an open and inclusive workplace, welcoming applications from all backgrounds. They are committed to making reasonable adjustments to support your application and experience.

This Land Manager position is an excellent opportunity for professionals seeking to apply their expertise in land management within a forward-thinking energy company. If you are passionate about sustainability, possess strong stakeholder management skills, and are ready to contribute to a crucial part of Scotland's infrastructure, this role could be the perfect next step in your career.
