Marine Engineering & Systems (ME&S) is a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine, system engineering, electrical engineering design and project support services to the offshore, marine and defence markets worldwide. Within this business unit, Naval Engineering have vast experience in engineering, construction, concept design and through life support for a wide range of front line naval and auxiliary support vessels.

This is not a Health & Safety or SHEF type role, it requires an extensive engineering background in a relevant field.
Who we are looking for?
As a Principal Safety & Environmental Engineer we are looking for someone who has an extensive engineering background in a relevant discipline and extensive experience of safety and environmental assessment/management processes that is specifically directed towards systems or product safety and environmental assessment in the maritime arena. You’ll be independently driven but also great at working within a team. You’ll be prepared and able to make decisions in own sphere of responsibility as well as having great people management skills.
What will you be doing?
The role is within our Safety and Environmental Engineering Group, developing designs through concept and early-stage design as well as supporting the bidding process. The role is for a Principal Safety and Environmental Engineer, which will require
As a Principal Safety & Environmental Engineer, you’ll be responsible for:
Developing the safety and environmental engineering strategy in line with the requirements of the various export opportunities in the Babcock new build and concept programs
Produce the necessary supporting Safety & Environmental documentation for each opportunity (SEMS, SEMP, SECR etc.)
Provide governance and assurance to safety and environmental projects as directed
Support other members of SEG in developing non-nuclear safety and environmental assessments or cases
Liaise with design team and other stakeholders throughout the design lifecycle to ensure coordination and functionality of design, including supporting design reviews
Provide expertise and support in own engineering specialisation to other members of the safety and environmental engineering team
The experience you’ll bringIdeally degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an engineering discipline with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered Have a fundamental understanding of Safety Management principals across the maritime domain including legislative requirements, Hazard Identification and Analysis (HIA) techniques, safety assurance throughout product lifecycle, safety case management and engineering assurance Good knowledge of Naval Engineering in RN ships and/or submarines would be advantageous Hold the Defence Maritime Regulator’s (DMR) Ship Safety & Environmental Management Training (SEMT) or Ship Safety Management Office (SSMO) Certificate or equivalent Be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. IMechE, RINA, IET, SARS etc.) and hold Chartered or Incorporated status (or be working towards) Either already UK Security cleared or able for achieve UK SC clearance
