People who are sentenced to Community Payback may have committed a wide range of crimes such as recurring shoplifting, theft or drink driving. Rather than sending them to prison, a magistrate or judge will have assessed them as being suitable for supervision in the community by the Probation Service. Your role as a Probation Service Officer within the Community Payback team will be to work with these people on probation as their supervising officer, motivating and supporting them to complete their unpaid work hours and make reparation to their local community. You will complete initial assessments about their offending, likelihood of reoffending and risk of harm. You will motivate them to attend, and take action where needed, preparing reports for Court. You will also encourage and support them to lead positive lives free from offending, signposting to community services and directing into education, training and employment input where suitable.

Our team is made up of a strong and inclusive group of colleagues, from all walks of life, who are passionate about helping and motivating people on probation to achieve their potential and make reparation to their communities. The Community Payback Team is committed to learning and development, and full training for the role of Probation Service Officer is provided, with regular support and supervision being provided throughout your journey. To support your professional development, you will also have access to a range of probation-related training on topics such as: positive reinforcement and desistance, substance misuse, domestic abuse awareness, counter-terrorism, and adult and child safeguarding.
