The VP, Senior Investment Writer, Product Marketing, will be responsible for the creation of editorial content that supports a range of investment products; with a focus on thought leadership, both long- and short-form, institutional and intermediary audiences, asset class and product updates, advertorials, and other marketing materials. The Senior Investment Writer works with the Head of EMEA Marketing and the Director of Editorial to understand priorities and manage content themes and development across multiple platforms and formats to drive sales, engagement, retention, leads and positive customer behaviour. This individual is an expert in all things related to content, brand consistency, tone of voice and segmentation. The position collaborates with the following departments, to greater or lesser extents, to position our capabilities and strategies: International channel marketing, Product Marketing, PR, Sales, Investment Management, Product Specialists, and various investment teams. Responsibilities Ultimately, the job of the Senior Investment Writer is to think like a publisher/journalist, leading the development of content initiatives to drive new and current business. This includes: Researching financial markets, securities, competitive products and materials, and Morgan Stanley Investment Management products. Following market and economic trends and proactively communicating investment teams’ views on timely investment topics. Understand the nuances of the international markets, establish a rapport with the sales teams and align content with the needs of investors. Writing key editorial content, including portfolio-specific, asset-class, and market updates, blog posts, in-depth white papers, newsletter articles, advertorials, and key marketing materials. Leading the editorial process, including idea generation, in-depth interviewing of knowledge experts and gathering and interpreting independent research. Overseeing content until completion, including coordination of necessary compliance reviews and incorporating stakeholder input. Editing content for delivery across a variety of mediums, including print, web and multimedia. Ensuring all content is on brand, consistent in terms of style, quality and tone of voice for multiple channels of content such as online, social media, email, video and print. Mapping out a content strategy that supports marketing and sales goals, determining which methods work for the brand and why. Periodic evolution of strategy is a must, aided by pro-active feedback and timely inputs from other stakeholders on their changing goals/activities. Supervising any outsourced content creation; be an arbiter of best practices in grammar, messaging, writing, and style. Suggesting and possibly developing materials that could support traditional marketing campaigns, ensuring with Director of International Channel Marketing that such campaigns and their goals are communicated clearly in advance to all relevant stakeholders. Success Criteria The Senior Content Manager’s success is measured on the continual improvement of customer nurturing and retention through storytelling, as well as the increase in new prospects into the enterprise through the consistent development of content to the various channels. Success criteria include: Positive brand recognition and consistency across chosen published channels. An increase in defined customer engagement metrics (measured by users taking the desired action…i.e. conversions, subscription, purchase, etc.). Website and social media traffic growth. Conversion metrics definition and growth. Social media positive sentiment metrics. Customer feedback and survey data. Increases in key search engine keyword rankings. A decrease in sales/buying cycles. Clearly defining content distribution during particular stages of the buying cycle (lead nurturing). Identifying up-sell and cross-sell opportunities through content analysis, and deploying content assets for higher conversion rates. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations or related communications field. MBA in marketing a plus. Significant experience in the asset management industry. Knowledge of the international trade press a plus. 10-15 years of experience as a respected leader in multichannel content creation. Experience with creating compelling messages for different target demographics. Expertise in all major business software applications (Microsoft Office, etc.). Audience development and subscription strategies experience a plus. Skills Required The Senior Investment Writer requires a combination of a targeted content development, strategic and publishing mindset, mindful of the extent of the internal capabilities available, with the most important aspect being to think “customer first”. In essence, the Senior Investment Writer is the corporate storyteller that must be empathetic toward the pain points of the customer. Specific skills required include: Job Requirements: In-depth knowledge of financial markets and investing concepts. Ability to research complex topics and interview investment professionals. Ability to review current financial market conditions and/or portfolio data and extract ideas. Ability to communicate complex financial topics in a clear and concise manner. Ability to think creatively, conceptually, and strategically. Ability to plan, prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting inflexible deadlines. Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Proven editorial skills. Outstanding command of the English language. Training as a print or broadcast journalist and has a “nose” for the story. Training in how to tell a story using words, images, or audio, and an understanding of how to create content that draws an audience (it is critical that the Senior Content Manager retain an “outsider’s perspective” much like that of a journalist.) The ability to think like an educator, understanding what the audience needs to know and how they want to consume it. Clear articulation of the business goal behind the creation of a piece (or series) of content. Able to screen out sales pitches and look for the relevant brand and customer story.
