At ABP, we are recruiting for a number of Trainee Pilots to join the pilotage team based on the Humber. You will be responsible for the safe pilotage of vessels from the point of embarkation to disembarkation within the Humber competent harbour authority area (CHA).
Our Pilots board a huge variety of vessels, from some of the biggest container ships and bulk carriers to Ro-Ro vessels and Naval ships. With the support of our Pilots, the Humber ports contribute £2.3 billion to the UK economy every year, support 42,000 jobs and together handle more than 65 million tonnes of cargo!

What you’ll be doing….Pilot vessels within ABP Humber CHA area of jurisdiction and conduct non-compulsory pilotage vessels, if services are requested. Growing your knowledge and understanding of the marine safety management systems, emergency procedures / plans and operational procedures. The compilation of vessel passage plans considering harbour authority guidelines and Directions, Humber Bylaws and berth guidelines. Develop your skills and knowledge for continued authorisation as a marine pilot and undertake all training as required such as navigational training. Assist in the training of all pilots - including trainee and apprentice - and Pilotage Exemption Certificate holders, including assessments and examinations. Provide professional advice to the Harbour Master and Pilotage Operation Managers on local navigational and other port marine issues when required. Act as duty pilot and provide Vessel Traffic Services support if/when required. Provide co-ordination support to all LPS, including collaborating closely with internal colleagues and external associates to help maintain delivery of a high quality, safe and efficient marine service.
What you’ll need….STCW II/2 Certificate of Competency - Master (Unlimited); Chief Mate (Unlimited) with command experience, considered. Full UK driving licence. Fitness to ENG-1 standards. The ability to communicate, influence, and mentor. An appreciation of the Port Marine Safety Code. A flexible approach to working arrangements and service delivery.
Ideally, you'll also have….Two years sea going experience in command. Geographical knowledge of the Humber district. Previous pilotage and ship handling experience, or a PEC holder.
