Salary £20.60 Job Title: Chargehand Fitter Responsible To: Engineering Manager/Engineering Supervisor Main Purpose of Job: To maintain and repair the Company vehicles to a safe and roadworthy condition, employing such skills and knowledge as may be required with due regard to current employment and health and safety legislation. Responsibilities & Duties: 1. Test vehicles and diagnose faults. 2. Observe, recognise and report on vehicle component defects or symptoms of impending failure. 3. Service, adjust and repair vehicles or components using the necessary equipment and tools in a proper and safe manner. 4. Examine vehicles completely and report orally and/or in writing upon the condition, roadworthiness and safety. 5. Interpret and implement Technical Service instruction data and Manufacturer modifications. 6. Requisition for replacement parts using Manufacturer part catalogue. 7. Manufacture as required, and within the limitation of machinery and equipment available, simple components. 8. Recognise repairs that need specialist skills. 9. Assess and cost repairs (in certain cases). 10. Train/mentor apprentices and new recruits. 11. Perform any ancillary duties which may be required from time to time. 12. Record all work done and time taken on each job in the paperwork form required. 13. Attend vehicle breakdowns/accidents etc. for Stagecoach North East or any other organisation when necessary as and when requested by management. In addition, breakdowns/accidents should be attended in accordance with any private operator be they PSV/Commercial Vehicle undertakings or private cars for which Stagecoach North East have a Repair/Service contrac14. On the basis that a vehicle has been reported to be defective by an employee, a Fitter is expected to undertake repairs on a vehicle which may be of another discipline, i.e. a small body and electrical repair, which Management consider are within his/her capabilities i.e., replace broken wing mirrors, replace light bulbs etc. 15. If vehicles are defective in the morning or evening period outside normal working hours or at weekends every effort should be made by the Fitter to repair the vehicle/vehicles and make it available for service. 16. If a breakdown occurs near the end of a Fitter shift then he/she would be expected to attend the breakdown/accident although it may take him/her over his/her normal finishing time. 17. To assist the Engineering Supervisors in the execution of their duties including achieving their targets and to deputise for Engineering Supervisor as and when necessary. 18. To assist in problem solving, technical, staff and material. 19. To ensure sufficient vehicles to meet the operating requirements of the depot. 20. To ensure that all vehicles provided for operation satisfy the standards set by both the Company and the Department of Transport. 21. To ensure that all Company procedures and statutory obligations relating to the depot, including Factories Act, Health & Safety at Work Act etc. are fully complied with. 22. To authorise stores warrants in the Engineering Manager absence. 23. To communicate and motivate staff at all levels to enhance team work. 24. To advise Engineering Supervisor on matters relating to discipline and/or welfare action of subordinates as and when necessary. 25. To advise Engineering Supervisors on staff training, operation planning, technical and poor quality standards. 26. To assist in the implementation of all matters relating to new technology and engineering. 27. To act and operate in a flexible manner, which may include working or changing shift patterns and covering the supervisory duties of other staff. 28. In addition to the foregoing the post holder will be expected to carry out any additional duties as directed by Supervisors/management which are deemed to be within the post holder capabilities.
