Corporate Banking Lawyer - VP

Job at Barclays in Glasgow, Glasgow City

Embark on a dynamic legal career at Barclays, a global leader in financial services. This Vice President role within the Corporate Banking Legal team offers a significant opportunity for a seasoned legal professional to play a pivotal role in supporting the bank's wholesale lending businesses. Based in Glasgow, Manchester, or Birmingham, this position is ideal for individuals seeking to deepen their expertise in complex financial transactions and contribute to the strategic direction of a major financial institution.

The Opportunity: Shaping Corporate Banking Law at Barclays

As a Corporate Banking Lawyer VP, you will be an integral part of the LPM Legal function, providing critical legal support to the Investment Bank, International Corporate Banking, and UK Corporate Bank. Your remit will span the entire lifecycle of wholesale lending activities, from origination and execution to distribution and asset management. This is a chance to engage with a diverse portfolio of transactions, from straightforward to highly intricate, and to advise the business on its strategic priorities and the firm's overarching objectives.

Key Advantages for Your Career Path:

  • Impactful Work: Directly influence the success of major lending operations across a global investment bank and corporate banking divisions.
  • Broad Exposure: Gain hands-on experience with a wide spectrum of corporate banking products, including trade and working capital finance, cash management, real estate finance, project finance, asset-backed finance, and general corporate lending.
  • Strategic Contribution: Beyond transactional support, you'll contribute to developing and implementing best-practice legal strategies, helping to manage legal and reputational risks.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with various internal stakeholders across credit, compliance, risk, tax, finance, and operations, as well as with other legal teams across departments and jurisdictions.
  • Professional Development: Engage in the creation and review of legal documentation, deliver training programs, and stay at the forefront of evolving legal and regulatory landscapes.
  • Leadership Potential: This role offers opportunities to set strategy, drive change, and, if applicable, manage and develop a team, aligning with Barclays' leadership expectations.
  • Global Reach: Contribute to the bank's global operations, advising on transactions and projects with an international dimension.
  • Flexible Location: The role is available in three key UK cities: Glasgow, Manchester, and Birmingham, offering geographical flexibility.

Key Considerations for Aspiring Candidates:

  • Essential Qualifications: A Qualified Solicitor in England and Wales is a prerequisite, with a demonstrable track record of leading loan financing transactions within the investment and corporate banking sectors.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of LMA documentation and market positions is crucial. A nuanced understanding of navigating the regulatory and compliance landscape is also paramount.
  • Stakeholder Management: The ability to effectively manage and build relationships with business stakeholders at all levels of experience is vital for success.
  • Desirable Skills: While not mandatory, experience gained at a magic or silver circle firm with a global practice, knowledge of specific market sectors (property, telecoms, utilities, project, infrastructure, general corporate), and in-house legal experience would be highly advantageous.
  • Assessed Skills: Be prepared for assessments that may cover critical skills such as risk and controls, change and transformation, business acumen, strategic thinking, and digital and technology proficiency, in addition to core legal technical skills.
  • Barclays Values: A strong alignment with Barclays' core values of Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence, and Stewardship, alongside the Barclays Mindset of Empower, Challenge, and Drive, is expected.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a driven legal professional to advance their career within a prestigious financial institution. You will be instrumental in ensuring that corporate banking activities are conducted in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations, thereby safeguarding the bank's reputation and mitigating legal risks.
