Engineering Technician reference: R-181032

Job at John Lewis Partnership in Milton Keynes, Milton Keynes

We're excited to present an exceptional opportunity for a skilled Electrical Engineering Technician to join our dynamic team at the Magna Park National Distribution Centre. This role offers a unique blend of technical challenge, rewarding compensation, and the chance to be part of a truly employee-owned business.

About the Opportunity

As an Electrical Engineering Technician, you will be instrumental in maintaining and optimising the complex building services infrastructure of our 24-7 operation. You'll be at the forefront of ensuring the smooth running of our site, tackling everything from planned preventative maintenance to swift, confident reactive responses. This role demands a keen eye for detail, strong diagnostic skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across various engineering disciplines, including MHE, HVAC, automation, and power/data networks.

Key Advantages for Candidates

  • Significant Earning Potential: Beyond the competitive salary range of £35,400 - £55,800, this role boasts a substantial 20% shift premium (calculated on the minimum salary, equating to £7,080 pre-tax). Furthermore, you'll benefit from an Evening Premium (£3.00/hour) for hours worked between 18:00 and 22:00, and a lucrative Night Premium (£4.00/hour) for hours worked between 22:00 and 06:00.
  • Career Development and Ownership: As part of the John Lewis Partnership, you're not just an employee; you're a Partner. This employee-owned model fosters a unique culture of shared responsibility, rewards, and genuine involvement in the success of the business.
  • Structured Working Pattern: The role involves a consistent 42-hour work week, spread across 14 shifts per month. This includes a mix of day shifts (05:45 - 18:15) and night shifts (17:45 - 06:15), providing a predictable rhythm to your working life. An example rota is available for review.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Beyond financial rewards, Partners enjoy a range of excellent benefits designed to support well-being and work-life balance. These include generous holiday entitlement that increases with service, a matched pension scheme, significant staff discounts at John Lewis & Partners and Waitrose & Partners, subsidised meals, free on-site parking, and more.
  • Impactful Role: You'll be directly contributing to the operational efficiency of one of the UK's largest distribution centres, playing a critical part in a vital national operation.

Key Considerations for Your Career Path

  • Technical Expertise Required: This role demands a strong foundation in electrical engineering. Candidates must possess the following qualifications: City & Guilds 2360 / 2330 Parts 1, 2 & 3, BTEC ONC / HNC, JIB Approved Electrician, or NVQ Level 3 equivalent. Experience with mechanical disciplines, specifically City & Guilds in 'Heating & Ventilation Industrial and Commercial Installations' or NVQ 6018, along with City & Guilds 2391 (Electrical Inspection & Testing) is essential.
  • Understanding of Regulations: A solid working knowledge of BS7671, 18th Edition Electrical Installation Regulations, and associated legislative and building regulations is crucial for ensuring compliance and safe working practices.
  • Diagnostic and Problem-Solving Acumen: The ability to confidently diagnose faults in electro-mechanical systems and building services, read electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic drawings, and troubleshoot to component level is paramount.
  • Flexibility and Collaboration: While the role has a defined focus, demonstrating flexibility to support other areas on campus and collaborating effectively with automation project and repair teams will be key to success.
  • Commitment to 24-7 Operation: The 24-7 nature of the distribution centre means you'll be working shifts, including nights. Candidates should be prepared for this working pattern and its associated premiums.

This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious Electrical Engineering Technician looking to advance their career within a supportive, employee-owned organisation that values its Partners and invests in their success. If you possess the required skills and are eager to contribute to a vital national operation, we encourage you to explore this exciting prospect further.
