This is a fantastic opportunity to embark on a rewarding career, gaining invaluable skills and contributing to the essential infrastructure that powers millions of lives.

Advantages for Aspiring Candidates:

  • A Secure and Essential Career: UK Power Networks plays a critical role in keeping the lights on for 19 million people across London, the South East, and East of England. Joining this sector means entering an industry that is fundamental to modern life, offering long-term job security and a sense of purpose.
  • Comprehensive Training and Development: This is a two-year, fully accredited programme (accredited by the IET and endorsed by EU Skills) designed to equip you with the skills to become a qualified "craft" person. You'll undertake a Level 3 Power Industry Craftsperson Apprenticeship, including a City and Guilds Level 2 in Electrical Power Engineering – Distribution and Transmission, with training provided by both internal experts and external college providers.
  • Choice of Craft Roles: The programme offers the opportunity to specialise in one of three crucial craft roles, each with its own unique challenges and rewards:
    • Cable Jointer: Play a vital role in installing, connecting, and repairing underground cables, ensuring a reliable power supply.
    • Overhead Linesperson: Work at heights to construct, maintain, and repair overhead power lines, ensuring the safe and reliable distribution of electricity.
    • Electrical Fitter: Install, maintain, and repair high-voltage electrical equipment and systems within substations.
  • Competitive Remuneration and Benefits: You will attract a starting salary of £37,226.00, plus a 3% bonus. Beyond this, UK Power Networks offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:
    • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
    • Generous personal pension plan with significant employer contributions (4% or 5% employee contribution receives 8% or 10% employer contribution)
    • Tenancy Loan Deposit Scheme
    • Season Ticket Loan
    • Tax-efficient benefits such as Cycle to Work, Home & Tech, and Green Car Leasing Schemes
    • Occupational Health support
    • Discounted gym membership
    • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Structured Application Process: UK Power Networks has a clear and multi-stage application process designed to identify the right candidates, including online applications, task-based assessments, audio interviews, and an in-person assessment centre. This allows candidates to showcase their skills and personality throughout the process.
  • Commitment to Employee Well-being and Growth: The company is dedicated to its apprentices' development, providing accommodation and meal allowances for extended training periods. They also emphasize health and safety, with a commitment to equal employment opportunities.

Key Considerations for Candidates:

  • Physical Demands and Outdoor Work: Be aware that these roles involve significant physical demands. This includes potential heavy lifting, working at heights, and in confined spaces. You must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, and potentially during day and night shifts. A specific upper weight limit of 116Kg may apply for roles involving fall arrest devices due to equipment safety regulations.
  • Commitment to Safety: A strong commitment to safe working practices is paramount. You will be expected to understand and apply safety procedures rigorously in all your activities.
  • Flexibility and Travel: While based in one of the specified office locations (Borehamwood, Colchester, Kings Lynn, Norwich, or Bury St Edmunds), the apprenticeship will involve travel to various training centres and operational sites across the UK. This may require overnight stays of varying durations, with accommodation and meal allowances provided. You will need a full UK driving licence.
  • Educational Requirements: A minimum of GCSE grade 3 (D) or equivalent in English and Maths is required, or Functional Skills Level 1 or 2. You will need to provide hard copies of these qualifications at the assessment stage.
  • Experience: This programme is for career changers, so prior experience in a craft-based or hands-on role is highly valued. Candidates will have either a Level 2 or higher qualification from further education OR more than 3 years of full-time work experience in a craft-based or hands-on role demonstrating high manual dexterity.
  • Application Deadline: Mark your calendars! The application closing date is Saturday, 31st January 2026, with the course commencing in September 2026.
