Do you want to be instrumental in developing, managing, and operating state-of-the art microscopy facilities for materials research/science? Do you have proven experience of working with Scanning Electron Microscopy and X Ray Micro-Computed Tomography?

The School of Civil Engineering houses the Centre for Infrastructure Materials (CIM), which is part of the UK Collaboratorium for Research on Infrastructure and Cities (UKCRIC). This Centre has state of the art facilities for the assessment and monitoring of the long-term performance of a range of construction materials, (e.g. cement, concrete, steel) in controlled and simulated environments. These facilities are key to achieve part of Centre’s aim, which is provide to the academic and industrial communities access to premium facilities for the testing of infrastructure materials at different scales (from micro to macro). The University also hosts the Bragg Centre for Materials Research, which aims to provide world-leading experimental and analytical facilities to understand and build materials from the atomic to the macro-scale.

As the Experimental Officer for CIM you will support its Director, Professor Leon Black, in managing aspects of the Centre and its facilities with the objective to increase our research capabilities, developing new and exciting research projects and collaborations, initially with researchers across the University, other UKCRIC partner institutions, and with industry. You will also be engaging with activities in the Bragg Centre for Materials Research, to expand their experimental and analytical facilities and provide further support to investigate a diverse range of materials at the micro-scale.

As part of your core responsibilities, you will manage and operate a Zeiss XRadia 410 X Ray Tomography Microscope (XRM), equipped with a Deben5000TEC loading and environmental rig, and a Zeiss Evo 15 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). You will be responsible for the effective operation of this equipment to meet users’ needs, and the development and application of new or novel techniques in response to changes in the research needs. You will be active in providing advice and training to users, engage with new users (internal or external to the University of Leeds), and actively participating in strategic planning of future activities for the growth and establishment of this new centre. You will interact with School staff to ensure that the facilities of CIM meet high health and safety and financial management standards required by the University. You will actively interact with researchers from other Schools and Faculties, as well as with industry collaborators. You will actively promote the facility internally and externally by attending seminars, conferences, and key events, also through activities with the Bragg Centre for Materials Research.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to develop their own research, preferably within the field of construction materials. We are looking for a professional, enthusiastic, and motivated individual with the ability to work alone and as part of a team. The ideal candidate will be communicative, organised, flexible and committed.

This role will be based at the university of Leeds campus and there is scope for it to be undertaken in a hybrid manner. We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.
