Job at Unilever in Surrey, KT22 7GR, England

Please Note: The deadline for applying is 23.59 the day before the job posting end date. Job Title: Global Sustainability Senior Manager - Climate Strategy & Governance Location: 100VE Work-Level: WL2C Business context Unilever is a global FMCG business committed to addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our time. Sustainability has long been part of Unilever core approach to doing business. We believe that sustainable business drives superior performance, and that this is the only way to create long-term value for all our stakeholders. We have always evolved our sustainability agenda to keep it leading and relevant. In May 2024, we launched our updated sustainability goals. These reflect a maturing of the corporate sustainability, where we see increased scrutiny, mandatory disclosure and regulation driving a heightened focus on delivery and impact. Our sustainability strategy focuses on four urgent issues: climate, nature, plastic and livelihoods. These were chosen as the most material risks to our business and where we can make the biggest impact. The Sustainability Function is responsible for setting our strategy, delivering global advocacy, implementing local policy engagement plans, managing content for issues relating to the four topics, and leading on the governance and accountability mechanisms to ensure the delivery of our goals. Climate change attracts particular attention from all our stakeholders including consumers, customers and investors. We have set ambitious targets to reduce emissions in our operations and value chain, and embed climate action into our Business Groups and brands. In March 2024, we published our second Climate Transition Action Plan, setting out the key actions we will take to achieve ambitious, 1.5C-aligned GHG emissions reduction targets by 2030. The role our team plays To support this agenda, the Sustainability function, and Climate team within it, provides strategic thought leadership, global partnerships, advocacy capabilities, and subject matter expertise to support the Business Groups and functions in driving change at scale across our value chain. JOB PURPOSE We are looking for a motivated and tenacious person to join the Climate team to lead on strategy and governance. This role will be based in London and report to the Head of Sustainability - Climate. The successful candidate will work alongside our Global Sustainability Senior Manager - Climate Advocacy, who leads our public policy advocacy, complementing this work by leading the development of internal strategy and policy in support of our climate goals and by effectively using governance and performance management processes to ensure we are on track to deliver. This role combines elements of sustainability strategy, governance, policy and partnerships at a senior level, supporting both the internal delivery of climate targets and helping to shape the external standards that set the context for that delivery. RESPONSIBILITIES Strategy Provide strategic guidance to the operational business teams charged with delivering against Unilever climate targets: Long-term ambition of net zero by 2039 42% reduction in scope 3 energy & industrial emissions by 2030 (2021 baseline) 30.3% reduction in scope 3 forest, land and agriculture emissions by 2030 (2021 baseline) 100% reduction in our scope 1&2 emissions by 2030 (2015 baseline) Support the evolution of these targets in response to the rapidly-changing external context. Closely collaborate with colleagues in Sustainability, Supply Chain, Procurement, Communications, and Business Groups. Serve as the central knowledge expert on climate strategy, providing on-going strategic counsel to the Business Groups and functional teams. Governance Track our delivery across our scope 1&2 and scope 3 climate targets. Effectively use the governance and accountability systems in place, including the SPI, OKRs, the ULE Quarterly Business Reviews and Quarterly Sustainability Reviews, and Sustainability Steerco (CSO-CSCO-CRDO-DCFO) to manage the delivery of Unilever climate targets, including providing early warning of challenges and roadblocks. Support the Head of Sustainability - Climate in leading a cross-business climate working group to ensure alignment and effective working between Sustainability, the Business Groups, Procurement, SERS and others. Work closely with the individual Business Groups to understand their challenges and ensure they have the right processes and structures in place to deliver the targets. Ensure we fully benefit from the Unilever Sustainability Advisory Council members’ climate expertise and insights, to support strong implementation and ambition. Bring significant depth, expertise and judgement to these processes including up-to-date insights on the changing external landscape in a way that supports Unilever to respond quickly.
