KTP Associate in Polymer Science and Engineering

Job at Aston University in Birmingham, West Midlands, B4

This is an exceptional opportunity to join a collaborative Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between Partners for Endoscopy Ltd (PFE) and Aston University. This role offers a unique pathway for a highly motivated Polymer Chemist to drive innovation in sustainable medical technologies and make a tangible impact on healthcare waste reduction.

The Opportunity:

At its core, this KTP is focused on developing a smart, biodegradable glove alternative using advanced electrospraying or similar technologies with sustainable polymers. This initiative directly addresses critical environmental concerns within the healthcare sector by reducing packaging and clinical waste, while also promising improved product fit and on-demand application. You will be at the forefront of creating a solution that offers significant commercial, environmental, and operational benefits across the healthcare supply chain.

What Makes This Role Stand Out for Your Career:

  • Cutting-Edge Innovation: You will be instrumental in designing and developing a novel product that merges polymer chemistry expertise with sustainable manufacturing processes. This is a chance to work on a project with real-world application and environmental significance.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: This KTP fosters a rich collaborative environment. You will work closely with leading academics from Aston University's polymer chemistry and materials science departments, as well as the senior management team at PFE. This provides invaluable exposure to both academic research and commercial industry practices.
  • Entrepreneurial Experience: As a KTP Associate, you'll gain hands-on experience in project management, stakeholder engagement, and navigating regulatory landscapes. This blend of technical and managerial responsibilities is excellent preparation for future leadership roles.
  • Professional Development: The KTP framework provides dedicated support for your personal and professional growth. With an allocated budget for development, you can pursue further training and enhance your skill set.
  • Strong Career Prospects: KTPs are renowned for their ability to transition associates into permanent roles. A significant percentage of KTP associates are offered employment by the partner company upon completion, indicating the value placed on their contributions and the skills acquired.
  • Impactful Contribution: Your work will directly contribute to PFE's strategic vision for sustainable medical technologies, potentially revolutionizing practices within the healthcare industry and reducing its environmental footprint.

Key Considerations for Aspiring Candidates:

  • Academic Foundation: A PhD in polymer chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field is highly desirable, reflecting the project's technical depth and innovative nature.
  • Technical Expertise: Essential skills include a strong academic background in polymer chemistry and materials science, with demonstrable experience in polymer synthesis, processing (particularly with sustainable or biodegradable polymers), and material characterization.
  • Technological Acumen: While experience with electrospraying, electrospinning, or forcespinning is desirable, a strong aptitude for learning and adapting to new technologies is crucial.
  • Autonomy and Collaboration: The role demands the ability to work both independently, taking initiative and managing your own workload, and collaboratively within a cross-functional team.
  • Stakeholder Management: You will be expected to effectively communicate and manage relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including academic partners, industry professionals, and crucially, NHS staff.
  • Regulatory Awareness: Familiarity with medical device regulations and recycling standards is a significant advantage, as ensuring product compliance is fundamental to commercial success.
  • Problem-Solving Prowess: This project will involve tackling complex challenges, requiring strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills to deliver agreed-upon milestones.

This KTP is an exciting opportunity for a driven and innovative polymer chemist looking to advance their career at the intersection of cutting-edge research and commercial application, while making a positive environmental impact.
