Lecturer in Economics CC)

Job at University of Southampton in Southampton, Southampton, SO17

The University of Southampton’s Department of Economics invites applications for up to three positions at the level of Lecturer (Assistant Professor). This recruitment follows the successful hiring in Autumn 2024 of two Lecturers, one Associate Professor, and two Professors, and forms part of a major expansion drive (2024–2026) aimed at further strengthening our vibrant research, education, and knowledge exchange culture.

Our department is renowned for impactful research in the economics of migration, networks, education, crime, and inequality. We are also leaders in developing and applying cutting-edge macroeconomic, experimental, and econometric methods. The 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) rated 100% of our research environment and impact initiatives, and 93% of our research outputs as internationally excellent or above. We have a strong record of securing prestigious grants from sources such as the ESRC, Horizon 2020, and Norface. Our department contributes to large-scale funding initiatives like the ESRC Centre for Population Change and ESRC Connecting Generations, both housed within the School of Economic, Social, and Political Sciences.

The University of Southampton is ranked among the world’s top 100 and is one of the UK’s top 15 research-intensive institutions. Building on our world-leading success, the University is championing four themed areas to address the most complex societal and environmental challenges: AI and Data Science, Sustainability and Resilience, Decarbonisation, and Engineering Better Health. In line with these themed areas, the Department of Economics will give priority to applications from scholars with expertise in applied economics (including migration, industrial organization, labour, environmental, and health economics), microeconometrics, financial econometrics, and data science.

Candidates who share our commitment to conducting cutting-edge research, actively contributing to our academic community, and upholding our values of fostering a supportive and inclusive research and educational environment are encouraged to apply.  Applicants should have a growing reputation in the field of Economics, demonstrated by publications in leading academic journals and research with significant academic and societal impact. They should also provide evidence of writing grant proposals or demonstrate the ability to develop a plan for seeking research funding. Newly appointed colleagues will also contribute to the Department’s educational mission by designing, delivering, and engaging in innovative, research-led teaching.

The School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences is committed to fostering an inclusive academic environment where all colleagues can thrive. Our dedication to equality, diversity, and inclusion is reflected in the renewal of our Athena SWAN Bronze award in February 2024, recognizing our efforts to advance gender equality, and our recent achievement of the Race Equality Charter Bronze award, which commended our initiatives to improve race equality across the University.

We are proud of our diverse faculty, which includes colleagues from a wide range of backgrounds. To support and retain talent, we actively promote policies that enhance career progression, provide mentorship opportunities, and enable flexible working arrangements - including part-time roles and career-break support -all within a workplace culture that prioritizes collegiality and inclusivity.

Successful candidates will be expected to start in September 2025, although a later start date may be negotiable.

For further information, you are welcome to contact the Head of Department of Economics, Professor Carmine Ornaghi (C.Ornaghi@soton.ac.uk).
