Are you an experienced and ambitious researcher with a focus on computational approaches in an operational weather and/or climate setting? Are you looking to grow your own research and build collaborations between the University of Leeds, the Met Office and the Met Office’s other University partners? Do you have ambitions to obtain external research funding? Do you want to supervise student research to foster and encourage the next generation?

New technologies are driving a revolution in weather and climate prediction. This post will build new links between the Met Office, and the School of Computer Science, linking with other School, such as the Schools of Earth and Environment (SEE) and Mathematics.

The University of Leeds is a founding member of the Met Office Academic Partnership (MOAP) and home to a sizeable joint Leeds/Met Office research group. To build on this long-standing collaborative strength it has recently appointed 4 enthusiastic and self-motivated scientists to lead collaboration between the Met Office and University in SEE, Mathematics and Geography: this is the fifth and final post.

Your role will also be to strengthen and enhance the University of Leeds’ excellent, internationally recognised profile in Computing, weather and climate science research with a special focus on building collaborations with the Met Office and MOAP. You will deliver student teaching in ways consistent with a remote 0.2 FTE role, primarily through supervision of student research projects. We are particularly interested in applications from individuals working in machine learning and data science.

You will have a PhD (or equivalent research experience) in weather/climate science, data science, computing, or allied subjects and a proven record of computational research in weather or climate science. You will have a track record of collaboration and a willingness to engage with a wide set of researchers across the University to build new collaborations between Leeds and the Met Office. This, depending on research focus, may include researchers in the named Schools, the Priestley Centre for Climate Futures, Leeds Institute for Fluid Dynamics, water@leeds, Global Food and Environment Institute (GFEI), Leeds Institute for Data Analytics, the National Centre of Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and the Centre for Environmental Modelling and Computation (CEMAC).
