Mansfield Fellow in UHF scanning (SCI

Job at University of Nottingham in Nottingham, Nottingham, NG7

We are pleased to advertise two new posts providing an exciting opportunity to join the world-leading biomedical imaging research group at the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre at the University of Nottingham (UoN). The Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre (SPMIC) has a long-standing track record of excellence in the development and application of MRI/S, with outputs including highly cited publications, intellectual property, commercialisation and clinical translation. These two 3-year, tenure-track appointments are being offered within the School of Physics and Astronomy and are linked to permanent academic posts at the end of the three-year period. They are suitable for MR physicists and biomedical engineers, or equivalent, who can  exploit the opportunities provided by the £29.1m award from UKRI to develop a national facility for ultra-high field (11.7T) human MRI scanning at the UoN.

The SPMIC currently operates a 7T scanner, two 3T research scanners, and an 0.5 T open scanner, alongside facilities for magnetoencephalography (MEG) and hyperpolarised MR. The 7T Philips Achieva scanner will be upgraded later this year to form a test-bed for the development of the 11.7T facility. The 11.7T scanner is being produced in collaboration with Philips, Tesla Engineering and the University of Glasgow. The magnet is scheduled for delivery in April 2026 with system integration continuing over the following 6 months. The scanner will be operated as a national facility and researchers from key universities across the UK have been involved in its development.

We support applicants from diverse career paths and backgrounds, and welcome applications from those wishing to work part-time, in order to combine the fellowship with other personal responsibilities. Researchers in MR Physics with interests in RF technology or ultra-high field magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy are particularly encouraged to apply.

As part of our commitment to improving equality, diversity, and inclusion within the school, shortlisted candidates will be given the opportunity to talk to a member of staff representing women, racially minoritized people, LGBTQIA+, or disabilities communities. This will be separate from the assessment process and will play no role in the decision to appoint.

Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours) ; however applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time (minimum 21.75 hours per week). Please specify in your application if you wish to work part time and the number of preferred hours. Job share arrangements may be considered.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Richard Bowtell (richard.bowtell@nottingham.ac.uk). Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
