The Science and Technology (S&T) group within Personal Care R&D is focussed on developing disruptive technologies, underpinned by strong scientific expertise to create products that delight our consumers whilst being good for the planet. We currently have an opportunity for a Materials Scientist in our Physical Sciences (Substrate & Formulation) Group within the S&T team based between our Port Sunlight R&D site and the Materials Innovation Factory in Liverpool. The role will deliver primarily to the deodorants programme and will be focussed on the development of new wetness protection technologies (physical chemistry focus). Core activities include: Contribute to building a pipeline of next generation wetness protection technologies. Develop mechanistic understanding for technology performance including gelation and interaction with substrates (skin). Characterise product performance via existing methodologies (e.g. microfluidics) and develop new methodologies to support performance requirements. Work with format teams to transfer product innovations from laboratory to pilot plants. The role is ideally suited to an energetic, resourceful materials scientist with excellent people-skills Research and Development is vital to the growth of Unilever brands and the successful applicant will have access to a range of world class laboratory and pilot plant facilities including the Product Innovation Laboratory and the Advanced Manufacturing Centre at Port Sunlight, and the Materials Innovation Factory at the University of Liverpool. RESPONSIBILITIES The role reports to a Research Manager and includes the following responsibilities: Creates ideas and develops technologies to meet consumer needs (primarily wetness protection) Provides evidence for product performance via characterisation methods (e.g. microfluidics) and develops new methodologies where appropriate. Collates, analyses data, and communicates insights for project deliverables and IP needs. Co-ordinates own project work, proposes next steps and organises experimental work for themselves and others, including third parties. Delivers high quality written reports and oral communications to the team and stakeholders. ALL ABOUT YOU MSc or PhD in Chemistry or Materials Science or equivalent research experience in Personal Care technology innovation. Expertise in characterising substrate/ active interactions is desired, preferably in a personal care field (although other experience will be considered). Understanding of active/ formulation interactions (e.g gelation properties) through microstructure characterisation (e.g. via microscopy/ NMR/ SAXS). Experience in data science, data handling and statistical DoE methods is preferred. Experience of delivering practical work to deadlines, independently and as part of an agile, flexible team. Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and team working skills are a prerequisite. Experience in the delivery of work through wider/global teams and independent third-party organisations would be preferred.
