Job Title: Personal Care S&T Advanced Materials, Measurement & Processing Group Leader Location: Port Sunlight Research Lab Work-Level: 2C JOB PURPOSE Lead the PC S&T Advanced Materials, Measurement & Processing group in the PC S&T Physical Science Team, providing both scientific leadership and people leadership for the group. Advanced Materials focuses on renewable chemistry, biosourcing, and biotechnology. Measurement involves advanced techniques used to characterize materials, microstructures, and surfaces, while processing entails oversight of our S&T processing program. Additionally, the role will link with other S&T Physical Science Group leaders and Technology Platform leaders. The role is part of the UK S&T Physical Sciences Leadership Team. RESPONSIBILITIES Lead Long-Term Research Projects Lead a large multidisciplinary S&T team. Collaborate with relevant S&T Leaders & CBP leaders to create technology roadmaps that integrate new science and technology into the business. Ensure research teams maintain robust patent and intellectual property pipelines. Introduce Disruptive Sciences and Advanced Capabilities Foster global collaborations with external academic/industrial partners, including Science Grid Partners, strategic industry partners, and SMEs. Introduce disruptive technologies and enhance functional capabilities for Personal Care, contributing strategically to Unilever initiatives like MIF. Work with category leaders to build long-term roadmaps supporting category science needs and developing new disruptive science and capabilities. Support E&A activities through publications, conferences, and professional connections as requested by categories. People and Interface Management Manage local managers, cultivate a high-performing team, and establish healthy successor plans. Recruit and develop talent for S&T research programs and wider skills & people builds. Regularly update senior leaders in S&T and global R&D on progress. Adapt strategies to fit category/R&D needs and influence stakeholders to drive science/technology solutions into the business. Build networks with wider teams, including SERS, S&T Biological Science team, Design/CTI, E&A, and Digital R&D to facilitate program delivery. Resource and Budget Management Manage research team resources. Oversee budgets for capex investment, open innovations, bought-in-costs, and consumables. Safety and Sustainability Ensure all work adheres to Unilever safety policies and sustainability targets. ALL ABOUT YOU Skills/Experience: PhD in Chemical or Physical Sciences or related fields with at least 5 years’ experience in FMCG R&D and over 5 years leading innovation research projects. At least 5 years of expertise in chemistry, measurement, processing or related disciplines. Proven ability to manage global research projects and lead high-performance teams. Experience in developing partnerships and managing external and internal collaborations for new technology development. Excellent communication skills and proven ability to manage senior stakeholders and multiple interfaces. Fluent in spoken and written English. Demonstrable qualities of being open, responsible, cooperative, self-motivated, creative, willing to take challenges, and capable of working under pressure.
