Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Performer, Venue and Audience Insight

Job at Royal Holloway University of London in Egham, Surrey, TW20

Full-Time, Fixed-Term (12 months)

Applications are invited for the post of Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Performer, Venue and Audience Insight, working on the P3R project in the CoSTAR National Lab.

We are pleased to invite applications for the role of ‘Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Performer, Venue and Audience Insight’, to work within the P3R project. P3R is an exciting research project looking to galvanise new and developing musical talent around access to the next generation of responsible AI tools and services. P3R is a project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s (AHRC) Bridging Responsibilities AI Divides (BRAID) programme that will explore new technologies, new business models and new approaches to data provenance in pursuit of an equitable future in live music.

If successful, you will work with Project Lead, Professor Jen Parker-Starbuck to develop a foundation of knowledge relating to performer, venue and audience perspectives on the use of AI in live performance – looking to translate that knowledge into value-led business models. The resulting knowledge will steer innovative prototyping and the development of responsible-AI practices in the field of live performance (and beyond).

This 12-month full-time post offers invaluable access to a diverse professional, industrial and academic network through both the project partnership and by being embedded within the wider CoSTAR Network (www.costar.ac.uk) as part of the National Lab. This provides you with the opportunity to work with a diverse and talented team of academics and practitioners including: (a) Professor Will Saunders MBE, Professor Mark Lycett, Professor Peter Richardson and Dr Laryssa Whittaker, within the National Lab at Royal Holloway; (b), Professor John Collomose, Director of the Centre for the Decentralised Digital Economy at Surrey University; and (c) Dr Lynn Love at Abertay University.

To address the needs of P3R, you will have (or be awaiting Viva for) a PhD in a field related to the creative industries. Importantly, you must have knowledge and experience of qualitative research methods, particularly in the design, organisation and execution of interviews with diverse groups of individuals and focus groups. You must also have excellent communication skills, be able to schedule and manage time effectively and also be able to maintain relations across the P3R team, CoSTAR National Lab and across performers, venues and audiences relating to live performance.

Highly desirable skills include knowledge of and experience with emerging trends related to AI & Blockchain technology, business model development, and/or ethical policies and issues of live performance, and in particular how emerging trends around technology mediate performance.

The University has adopted hybrid working for some roles and a degree of remote working could be possible for this role, but applicants may need to be flexible to travel for interview collection in some cases. Travel will be required for this role for research and meeting purposes.

In return we offer a highly competitive rewards and benefits package including:
