Opportunity Overview: Principal Engineer – Building Services & Auxiliary Power

This is a significant opportunity for an experienced Principal Engineer to join SSEN Transmission's Network Engineering team, a critical function within the Asset Management and Operations Directorate. This role is central to ensuring the safety, reliability, and compliance of all engineering activities within the Transmission business. If you are a driven and accomplished engineer looking to shape the future of energy infrastructure and influence industry standards, this position offers a compelling career path.

Key Advantages for Candidates:

  • Strategic Impact: Play a vital role in defining technical policy, influencing industry standards, and driving decision-making for innovative, future-ready projects across SSEN Transmission’s network. Your expertise will directly contribute to the ongoing energy transition and the achievement of net-zero goals.
  • Technical Leadership: You will be the Subject Matter Expert for a wide range of crucial building services and auxiliary power systems, including LVAC/LVDC systems, standby generators, EV charging, smart monitoring, battery systems, and security. This includes writing, maintaining, and owning technical specifications, as well as performing Technical Authority reviews and approvals.
  • Career Development and Knowledge Sharing: The role fosters an environment of continuous learning and development. You will provide technical consultancy services, encourage staff development, and have a willingness to share your specialist knowledge. Furthermore, representing SSEN Transmission at industry bodies like ENA, IEC, or CIGRE provides excellent opportunities for professional growth and networking.
  • Competitive Remuneration and Benefits: A strong salary range of £58,100 to £87,100 is offered, complemented by a performance-related bonus, car/car allowance, and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your family, finances, and overall wellbeing. This includes discounts on private healthcare and gym memberships, wellbeing services like a free online GP and 24/7 counselling, and various financial support schemes.
  • Flexible Working: SSEN Transmission embraces a "Flexible First" approach to work, offering options that can be discussed to suit your needs.

Key Considerations for Candidates:

  • Base Location Requirement: While a flexible approach to work is promoted, candidates will need to be based at one of SSEN's offices or depots in Scotland (Aberdeen, Inverness, or Perth).
  • Educational and Professional Qualifications: A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline is essential. Chartered Engineer status with a relevant institution, or significant progress towards it, is highly valued.
  • Extensive Technical Experience: Demonstrable expert-level experience in the design, specification, construction, operation, and maintenance of electrical services and auxiliary systems within data centres, substations, or industrial settings is critical. A deep understanding of national and international standards is also required.
  • Stakeholder Management: Proven experience in managing diverse stakeholders, including engineering teams, asset management, and contractors, is a necessary skill.
  • Industry Engagement: A willingness and ability to represent SSEN Transmission at industry events and working groups is a key aspect of the role.
  • Data-Led Approach: Experience in developing a data-led approach to design validation and specification compliance for transmission substation building requirements will be advantageous.
