Unlocking the Future of Sustainable Electrification: A Prestigious Research Associate/Fellow Opportunity

For ambitious researchers at the forefront of innovation in electric motor drive technologies, a truly exceptional opportunity awaits. This position, situated within a significant £7 million EPSRC-funded programme, offers the chance to be a pivotal figure in shaping the future of sustainable energy. Collaborating with leading teams from the universities of Newcastle and Bristol, this project is dedicated to pioneering radical innovations in highly integrated electric motor drive technologies. The overarching goal? To drastically reduce energy wastage and manufacturing material usage, while simultaneously achieving dramatic improvements in power-to-weight and power-to-volume ratios, all coupled with extended service life.

This role is designed for a highly motivated Research Associate/Fellow eager to drive and support groundbreaking research at the Nottingham site. You will not only lead and deliver individual and collaborative research initiatives but also make a significant contribution to the strategic direction of research within the esteemed Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) Research Institute in the Faculty of Engineering. Your research agenda will focus on heterogeneous integration-based activities, delving into critical areas such as power semiconductor bonding, interconnects, packaging, thermal management, and reliability. This is a space where you can develop and champion novel concepts and ideas, with strong support provided for the creation and submission of innovative research development proposals and funding bids.

Advantages for Potential Candidates:

  • Impactful, Large-Scale Project: Be part of a substantial £7 million EPSRC-funded programme, offering the scope and resources to make a tangible difference in sustainable electrification.
  • Collaborative Environment: Work alongside esteemed academics and researchers from multiple leading universities, fostering cross-pollination of ideas and expertise.
  • Cutting-Edge Research: Engage with "radical innovation" in highly integrated electric motor drive technologies, positioning you at the very forefront of the field.
  • Strategic Influence: Contribute to shaping the future research direction of the PEMC Research Institute, gaining valuable leadership experience.
  • Entrepreneurial Support: Receive encouragement and backing to develop and submit your own innovative research proposals and funding bids, fostering a strong track record in grant writing.
  • Career Growth: This role offers a fantastic platform for career advancement, particularly for those looking to deepen their expertise in advanced power electronics and drive systems.
  • Potential for PhD Co-Supervision: If you have a passion for mentoring and guiding emerging talent, prior experience in co-supervising or mentoring PhD students is desirable and will be an asset.

Key Considerations for Your Career Path:

  • Specialized Expertise Required: The ideal candidate will possess significant prior experience in power semiconductor packaging and bonding techniques, specifically in silver nano-sintering processes, and a strong track record in testing and analyzing semiconductor packages.
  • Demonstrated Research Output: A consistent history of published research in peer-reviewed publications is essential, showcasing your ability to disseminate findings effectively.
  • Proactive and Organized Approach: You'll need to be a dynamic self-starter, exceptionally well-organized, and maintain a positive attitude. The ability to manage and conduct research activities collaboratively with academics, researchers, and PhD students is crucial.
  • Collaborative Stakeholder Management: Experience working effectively with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, navigating challenging and complex multidisciplinary issues, will be highly valued.
  • Fixed-Term Contract: This is a fixed-term, full-time position funded until 31 December 2028. Candidates should be aware of this timeframe in their career planning.

This is more than just a job; it's an opportunity to contribute to a sustainable future through pioneering technological advancements. If you are a highly motivated and experienced researcher looking to make a significant impact, we encourage you to explore this exciting prospect.
