Job at University of Southampton in Southampton, Southampton, SO17

We are seeking a dedicated researcher to join the RSE Metascience project, which is working to advance the recognition and development of Research Software Engineers (RSEs) globally. In this role, you will be engaged in data science, contributing to the integration and analysis of survey data, compiling bibliometric data, and supporting software repository activities. You will play a pivotal role in developing analytical tools, generating actionable insights, and informing policies that enhance RSE careers and contributions to research.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to shape the future of research software engineering, contributing to global scientific advancement and innovation. Join us to make a lasting impact on the research and development landscape.

Collaborating closely with project partners and under the guidance of the principal investigator, you will create the RSE Metascience Repository, ensuring its role as a cornerstone for evidence-based policymaking and global collaboration. Key responsibilities include leading the design and implementation of survey tools (e.g. for the International RSE Survey 2025), analysing repository data, and producing impactful research outputs for conferences, journals, and policy briefings with the support of Southampton Public Policy. You will also engage with stakeholders to align project activities with the evolving needs of the RSE community.

As part of this position, you will:

Lead the design and analysis of the RSE Survey 2025, bibliometric data, and repository usage metrics to provide insights into RSE contributions.  Develop and expand existing Python-based tools to analyse research software development practices and trends.  Collaborate on the establishment of best practices for research software engineering, leveraging AI tools and principles of open science.  Participate in policy workshops, contributing to dialogue with policymakers and influencing the future of RSEs in research ecosystems.

Essential Qualifications:

Experience in research software, data science, bibliometric analysis, or repository studies.  Proficiency in Python programming, with experience in developing analytical tools and workflows.  Knowledge of open science practices, research reproducibility, and FAIR principles.

Desirable Skills:

Experience with survey design and analysis.  Familiarity with AI-assisted software development tools and their application in research.  Strong communication skills and the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including policymakers and researchers.

The position will be located within ECS on Highfield Campus and the management will be provided by the project’s Principle Investigator, Dr. Heather Packer. This position involves collaboration with the Software Sustainability Institute and Public Policy Southampton.
