Research Fellow in Atmospheric Ice Nucleation

Job at University of Leeds in Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced experimental cloud and aerosol researcher to make a significant impact on our understanding of climate change. Join one of the world's leading atmospheric science institutes at the University of Leeds and contribute to cutting-edge research that addresses a critical uncertainty in global climate projections.

The Opportunity:

  • Groundbreaking Research: Play a pivotal role in projects like M-Phase and IceSO, focused on reducing uncertainty in cloud-climate feedbacks. You will be at the forefront of investigating the properties of low-level oceanic clouds and the influence of aerosol particles, particularly in the Southern Ocean.
  • Addressing Key Climate Science Questions: Contribute to solving a major challenge in climate modeling: the poor representation of supercooled liquid clouds and their impact on solar radiation. Your work will directly inform the development of more accurate climate models.
  • Innovative Technology: Utilize and deploy the PINE (Portable Ice Nucleation Experiment), a novel mobile cloud chamber, for high-time resolution measurements in remote oceanic regions. This represents a significant advancement in our ability to study ice-nucleating particles (INPs).
  • Collaborative Environment: Work alongside a distinguished team of researchers at the University of Leeds, including experts in electron microscopy, global aerosol modeling, and cloud modeling. You will also collaborate with esteemed partners at CSIRO.
  • Career Advancement: Further your career in a world-leading atmospheric science institution, with opportunities to deepen your expertise in experimental cloud and aerosol research and its application to climate science.

Key Considerations for Candidates:

  • Expertise Required: A strong background in experimental cloud and aerosol research is essential for success in this role.
  • Location and Flexibility: The position is based on the university campus, with the potential for a hybrid working arrangement. The university is also open to discussing flexible working options.
  • Visa Sponsorship: This post may be suitable for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route, though first-time applicants might need to meet specific salary requirements.
  • Contribution to Global Impact: This role offers the chance to contribute to research with global implications, addressing fundamental questions about Earth's climate.

What You Can Expect:

The University of Leeds offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your well-being and professional growth. This includes:

  • Generous annual leave of 26 days, plus approximately 16 additional days off (bank holidays and university closure days), totaling around 42 days per year.
  • A substantial pension scheme with life assurance.
  • Access to excellent health and wellbeing facilities, including discounted membership at "The Edge," a state-of-the-art campus gym.
  • Opportunities for personal development through courses offered by the Organisational Development & Professional Learning team.
  • Convenient on-site amenities such as childcare facilities, shopping discounts, and travel schemes.

This position presents a unique chance to contribute to vital climate research while developing your career in a supportive and rewarding academic environment. If you are passionate about atmospheric science and possess the required expertise, this opportunity is well worth exploring.
