Research Fellow in Molecular Mechanisms of Thrombosis

Job at University of Leeds in Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2

Faculty of Medicine and Health

Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine

We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a background in molecular biology, cell biology or biomedical research? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading Cardiovascular Institutes?

The University of Leeds is one of the top 80 universities in the world. We have a truly global community, with more than 39,000 students from 170 different countries and over 9,000 staff of 100 different nationalities. Established in 1904, we have a strong tradition of academic excellence, reflected in first-class student education, along with world-leading research that has a real impact around the globe.

You will join a thriving and multidisciplinary research group and have the opportunity to contribute to an exciting piece of work which has the potential to transform our textbook knowledge of blood clotting and thrombosis. You will be involved in research that follows the recent findings of a new structure of fibrin (a polymer produced by blood coagulation) that forms a continuous film across the surface of blood clots and may contribute to thrombosis. You will be responsible for uncovering the impact of fibrin films on further clot formation and understanding the effect of anticoagulants and antiplatelet therapies on film formation. You will also explore the relationship between phospholipid exposure on cells and film formation and reveal how  fibrin films influence clot contraction. Finally, you will explore how blood flow cessation in the blood may contribute to film formation on thrombi.

With the ability to manage competing demands effectively, you will be highly motivated and able to work effectively within a large team with colleagues in Leeds studying other aspects of blood clot structure and function and their influence on thrombosis. You will have a PhD in molecular biology, cell biology, biomedical science or a closely allied discipline, or have submitted your PhD prior to the appointment start date. A strong background in haemostasis and thrombosis research would be an advantage.

Fixed term for 36 months to complete specific time limited work.
