Research Fellow in Tissue Engineering

Are you interested in working in the field of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, furthering your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities? The use of biomaterials for medical purposes to augment, repair, or replace diseased or damaged tissue/organs, is a promising therapeutic approach. While many excellent biomaterials have been developed in recent years, although providing physical, mechanical and chemical cues, these lack the desirable biological activities to regulate appropriate cellular functions that promote tissue formation and as a consequence, implant failure occurs. Therefore, tissue engineering, which involves the introduction of biomimetic cues required for some healthcare applications has emerged as a promising strategy to overcome synthetic scaffold limitations.

The work proposed aims at the development of a novel bioactive composite system to incorporate biomimetic cues to a synthetic scaffold and then test their stability, their physicochemical properties and evaluate their ability to enable cell adhesion and proliferation and differentiation. The objective of this work is to generate preliminary data that will reinforce and create a strong foundation for a grant proposal to MRC. 

The candidate will have a PhD and will have good experience in cell biology and tissue engineering. The candidate will also have experience of working both independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential.

This role is fixed term for 4 months to complete specific time limited work.  

This role will be based on the St James’s University Hospital site and University of Leeds main campus. We are also open to discussing flexible working arrangements.
