Shape the Future of Healthier Buildings: An Exceptional Research Opportunity at the University of Nottingham

Are you a passionate and analytically driven researcher looking to make a significant impact on global health? The University of Nottingham presents a truly unique and exciting opportunity to join a groundbreaking international project that is set to redefine how we approach infection resilience in indoor environments. If you're eager to contribute to a world-first initiative with direct policy relevance, this role could be the perfect launchpad for your next career move.

This position is at the forefront of the ARPA-H BREATHE programme's SCALE project, a visionary collaboration focused on developing the world's first real-time infection-risk management platform for indoor spaces. Your work will be instrumental in bridging the critical gap between public health principles and the built environment, directly influencing the design and operation of buildings to safeguard the health of millions worldwide.

Key Responsibilities and Your Impact:

As a pivotal member of the research team, you will concentrate on Technical Area 2, focusing on Respiratory Risk Assessment. This involves:

  • Developing and applying sophisticated quantitative health-risk and epidemiological models to understand the link between indoor exposures and health outcomes, utilizing measures like Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs).
  • Collaborating closely with built-environment specialists to integrate epidemiological evidence with crucial data on airflow, exposure, and health impacts. This synergy will be essential for guiding practical, real-world interventions.
  • Conducting comprehensive systematic literature searches and meta-analyses of dose-response and exposure-response data, which will be vital for model calibration and uncertainty analysis.
  • Contributing to the scientific leadership behind the risk analysis underpinning the world’s first international standard for controlling infectious aerosols in buildings (ASHRAE Standard 241), a testament to the caliber of research conducted here.

Career Advantages and Development:

This role offers unparalleled advantages for ambitious researchers:

  • Pioneering Research: Be at the cutting edge of a project that is creating a global first. The SCALE project is not just research; it's setting new international standards for public health in the built environment.
  • Interdisciplinary Expertise: You will gain invaluable experience and develop deep expertise across epidemiology, building science, and exposure modelling. This multidisciplinary approach is highly sought after in today's research landscape.
  • Real-World Impact: Your contributions will directly inform policy and practice, leading to tangible improvements in public health outcomes. The opportunity to translate complex research into real-world health benefits is a significant career differentiator.
  • Mentorship and Collaboration: Join an experienced, collaborative team led by Dr. Benjamin Jones and Dr. Chris Iddon, renowned for their scientific leadership. You'll have the opportunity to work alongside global experts and contribute to a supportive and dynamic research environment.
  • Teaching and Knowledge Transfer: Beyond your core research, you will have the chance to educate built-environment researchers on health-risk and epidemiological principles. This dual role enhances your leadership skills and broadens your impact.

Key Considerations for Candidates:

To excel in this role, prospective candidates should possess the following:

  • A PhD (or be nearing completion) in Public Health, Epidemiology, Environmental Health, or a closely related quantitative discipline.
  • Strong Quantitative and Analytical Skills: The ability to develop and apply complex models and perform rigorous data analysis is paramount.
  • Passion for Public Health: A genuine interest in translating research findings into tangible public health benefits is essential.
  • UK-Based Appointment: This is a UK-based role, requiring you to work from the University Park Campus in Nottingham.
  • Fixed-Term Contract: The initial contract is fixed-term until December 31, 2026, with the potential for renewal based on funding and performance, offering a solid period for impactful work.

This is more than just a research position; it's an invitation to be part of a transformative initiative that will shape healthier living spaces for generations to come. If you are driven by innovation and dedicated to improving public health, we encourage you to explore this exceptional opportunity.
