Unlocking the Future of Fibre Lasers: A Groundbreaking Research Opportunity

Are you a driven researcher with a passion for cutting-edge optoelectronics and the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence? The HiPPo project at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) presents an exceptional opportunity to be at the forefront of developing the next generation of "smart" fibre lasers. This role is ideal for ambitious individuals looking to make a significant impact on the landscape of modern manufacturing and contribute to a globally recognized research institution.

About the HiPPo Project:

Fibre lasers are integral to advanced manufacturing processes, from precise cutting and welding to 3D printing and marking. As we transition into the era of Industry 4.0 and digital manufacturing, the demand for more adaptable and intelligent laser systems is escalating. The HiPPo project is pioneering this evolution by moving beyond static fibre lasers to create "smart" systems that can automatically reconfigure and optimize in real-time. This ambitious endeavor requires groundbreaking research across multiple disciplines, including new fibre core materials, advanced control of laser instabilities, high-speed beam manipulation, and the application of deep learning for complex coherent beam combination.

Your Role in Shaping the Future:

As a key member of the HiPPo project team, you will be instrumental in developing a revolutionary "digital fibre laser." Your primary focus will involve leveraging neural network control of a tiled array of fibre lasers within a coherent beam combination architecture. This innovative approach will unlock unprecedented real-time scaling and beam shaping capabilities, pushing the boundaries of what is currently possible.

You will join a vibrant team of nine Research Fellows and a similar number of PhD students at the prestigious Optoelectronics Research Centre. This collaborative environment provides access to state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities and the invaluable guidance of world-leading experts in both fibre laser technology and deep learning.

Advantages for Your Career Path:

  • Pioneering Research: Be a part of a project that is at the absolute cutting edge of fibre laser technology and its integration with AI. This is an opportunity to contribute to truly novel advancements.
  • World-Class Expertise: Work alongside and learn from internationally recognized leaders in fibre lasers and deep learning, accelerating your own professional development.
  • State-of-the-Art Facilities: Gain hands-on experience with advanced equipment in a leading research institution.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: This role fosters a rich environment for collaboration between experimentalists and AI specialists, offering a unique opportunity to broaden your skill set.
  • Career Advancement: The skills and experience gained in this role are highly sought after in both academia and advanced industrial research and development.
  • Prestigious Institution: Being part of the University of Southampton, a top-tier global university and a leader in UK research, significantly enhances your academic and professional profile.
  • Commitment to Sustainability and Inclusion: Join an organization that prioritizes environmental responsibility and fosters a thriving, inclusive culture for all staff.

Key Considerations for Candidates:

  • Required Qualifications: A PhD in an experimental discipline or equivalent practical experience is essential.
  • Ideal Background: While not strictly mandatory, experience in fibre optics, low-noise lasers, and optical amplifiers, along with practical implementation knowledge, will be highly advantageous.
  • AI Awareness: A strong understanding of or a keen interest in deep learning techniques is beneficial, as you will be working closely with deep learning specialists.
  • Project Focus: This is an experimental role with a strong computational and control element. Candidates should be comfortable with both hands-on laboratory work and theoretical/computational aspects.
  • Fixed-Term Contract: Please note that this is a fixed-term position until February 29, 2028.

This is a truly exceptional opportunity for a motivated researcher to make a lasting contribution to the future of intelligent laser systems. If you are ready to embrace innovation and excel in a dynamic research environment, we encourage you to explore this exciting prospect.
