Senior Post Doctoral Research Assistant – Forest Nursery Research

Job at Harper Adams University in Newport, Shropshire, TF10

Opportunity Review: Research Fellow - Sustainable Tree Growing Media Trials

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced researcher to contribute to a significant, multi-stakeholder project focused on advancing sustainable practices in tree nursery production. This role offers a unique chance to work at the intersection of academia, industry, and environmental stewardship.

The Project: Cultivating a Greener Future for Native Oaks

The core of this initiative lies in rigorous scientific investigation into the efficacy of novel, sustainable growing media for native oak production. Collaborating with Harper Adams University, a forest nursery, a growing media company, an agronomy company, and a local council, you will be instrumental in conducting both polytunnel and field-bed trials. The research aims to:

  • Characterise the performance of high-sustainability alternative growing media and amendments.
  • Assess their ability to foster quality tree growth while reducing resource inputs.
  • Compare these novel media against established peat and peat-free alternatives.
  • Understand how these media perform under various environmental conditions, including different irrigation, fertiliser, and pesticide applications.
  • Identify optimal media for enhancing tree production and resilience to climate change impacts, particularly drought.

Your Role: Driving Practical Research and Data Excellence

As a Research Fellow, you will be at the forefront of managing the practical field trials, ensuring the meticulous collection of high-quality data. This demanding yet rewarding role requires:

  • An organised, proactive, and determined approach to trial preparation and execution.
  • Effective collaboration with a diverse team of professionals to deliver scientifically rigorous research.
  • Strong communication skills to engage with stakeholders and overcome practical field challenges.
  • Timely identification and escalation of any issues encountered.

Beyond practical fieldwork, you will also be responsible for data analysis and the professional write-up of research findings. This aspect of the role necessitates robust academic writing skills and a solid understanding of data analysis techniques.

Key Advantages for Candidates:

  • Impactful Research: Contribute directly to sustainable forestry and climate change adaptation by shaping the future of tree production.
  • Cross-Sector Collaboration: Gain invaluable experience working alongside leading professionals from academia, industry, and public sectors.
  • Hands-On and Analytical: Balance practical, field-based research with sophisticated data analysis and academic writing.
  • Career Development: Further hone your skills in experimental design, data management, scientific communication, and project leadership.
  • Desirable Skills: While a PhD in a relevant discipline and post-doctoral experience are required, specialist knowledge in soil science and plant biology within a nursery context is a significant advantage that will support your growth in this role.

Key Considerations for Your Career Path:

  • Academic Rigour: This role demands a commitment to scientific precision and the ability to produce publishable research.
  • Problem-Solving: Be prepared to tackle practical challenges in a dynamic field environment and devise innovative solutions.
  • Adaptability: The project involves working with various growing media and under different trial conditions, requiring flexibility and a willingness to learn.
  • Teamwork: Success hinges on your ability to collaborate effectively and contribute to a shared vision.

This position offers a substantial opportunity for a researcher looking to make a tangible difference in the field of sustainable agriculture and environmental science. If you are driven by impactful research and possess the required qualifications and a passion for plant science, this role could be an excellent step in your career trajectory.
