Teaching Fellow CC)

Job at University of Southampton in Southampton, Southampton, SO17

Be part of the dynamic development of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology at the University of Southampton, a global top 100 university (QS World Rankings 2021). Our department prides itself on its interdisciplinarity in research and teaching and strong focus on research methods. Our suite of undergraduate degree programmes in Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology are attracting exceptional numbers of well qualified students. Ranked 4th in the UK for research quality (REF2021 UoA20), our research community holds a world-leading reputation for research that addresses global, national, and local challenges, informs policy, and makes a real difference to people and society.

About You

You will be a committed and engaging educator in the field of criminology, sociology or social policy and will contribute to the development of our undergraduate programmes. We welcome applications that bridge these disciplinary areas, but especially encourage applicants with expertise in digital sociology to additionally support the delivery of Southampton’s online MA in Artificial Intelligence (non-Stem).

You will have the expertise to strengthen our teaching profile and contribute to our intellectual community. You will have experience of teaching in Higher Education and a doctorate or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in an aligned social science discipline is essential.

As a Teaching Fellow, you will teach at an undergraduate and postgraduate level. Whether developing your own teaching approaches, acting as supervisor to your students or contributing to the effective administration of our department, you will enjoy scope to innovate and make a significant impact.

What we can offer you

We recognise that this may be your first role in an academic institution, or want to explore more opportunities to build on your teaching skills. Through our Centre for Higher Educational Practice, we promote academic professional learning for every member of University staff. We actively support educators through either a taught programme (Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice) or a portfolio based approach (Professional Recognition of Educator Practice).

Committed to supporting our teaching and research community, we are open to a flexible working approach. With an understanding that there is a need to be on campus for teaching duties, we are open to a hybrid approach. We give full consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly including part-time and those who have taken a career break. Proud to be a founding signatory of the Athena Swan gender equality charter, we hold an institutional Silver award.

As well as additional benefits that will make your life easier, such as a generous holiday allowance and additional university closure days, we will support your long-term future too with access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), subsidised health and fitness facilities and a range of discounts.

As a university we aim to create an inclusive environment that attracts, supports and retains the best students and staff from diverse backgrounds and experiences from across the world. We are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work.
