Procurement Manager, John Lewis Partnership

Job at John Lewis Partnership in Greater London, WC2N

Opportunity Review: Procurement Manager, Supply Chain

This is an exciting opportunity for a commercially astute and experienced Procurement Manager to join the dynamic Supply Chain Procurement Team at the John Lewis Partnership. This role offers a significant chance to make a tangible impact on the Partnership's operational efficiency and financial performance by focusing on Goods Not For Resale (GNFR) procurement.

Key Advantages for Candidates:

  • Strategic Impact: You will be at the forefront of strategic projects, contributing to significant investments within the Partnership's network. This isn't just about day-to-day procurement; it's about shaping the future of the supply chain.
  • Broad Scope and Flexibility: While the primary focus is John Lewis Distribution (3PLs, 1 & 2 Person Carriers, Warehouse Automation & Equipment), the role offers considerable scope and flexibility to engage with other critical areas such as Waitrose 3PLs, International Freight, UK Consolidated Primary Inbound transport services, and Pan Partnership Fleet & Fuel. This breadth provides diverse learning and development opportunities.
  • Driving Value and Mitigating Risk: This role empowers you to actively challenge existing cost allocations, spend commitments, and third-party management. Your expertise will be crucial in reducing overall GNFR spend and mitigating third-party risks, directly contributing to the Partnership's financial health and stability.
  • Leveraging Advanced Tools: You will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge digital tools like Coupa Sourcing Optimisation AI and various market insight tools, enabling in-depth analysis and informed decision-making. This exposure to advanced technology is a significant career development advantage.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: The role necessitates close collaboration with a wide range of internal stakeholders, including Supply Chain, Change Management, Commercial Finance, and Legal, including Senior Leaders. This fosters strong relationship-building and communication skills.
  • Employee Ownership: As part of the John Lewis Partnership, you will be a Partner, sharing in the ownership, rewards, and successes of the UK's largest employee-owned business. This unique model fosters a strong sense of belonging and shared purpose.
  • Hybrid Working and Location Choice: The Partnership embraces a hybrid working approach, offering a blend of office and home-based work to support work-life balance. You can choose between a London or Bracknell office base, with flexibility for necessary travel to other locations.

Key Considerations for Candidates:

  • Experience Required: A strong foundation in procurement is essential, with demonstrated experience in category planning, supplier management, and extensive negotiation and contracting expertise, particularly within Supply Chain Services & Equipment.
  • Analytical and Influencing Skills: The ability to conduct critical analysis and influence a broad cross-section of stakeholders, both internally and externally, is paramount. Your commercial acumen will be key to driving business improvement opportunities.
  • Stakeholder Management: Effective engagement and management of a diverse group of stakeholders, including senior leadership and external suppliers, will be a core component of success in this role.
  • Understanding of Trends: A proactive approach to understanding both internal and external market trends, as well as broader industry developments, will be vital for strategic decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Commitment to Policy and Ethics: Adherence to Procurement Policy, supplier management, and risk frameworks is critical. A commitment to the Partnership's Ethics & Sustainability ambitions will be highly valued.
  • Travel Expectations: While hybrid working is supported, be prepared for travel to various office locations (London, Bracknell, Milton Keynes) and to visit supplier and Partnership sites as dictated by project needs.
  • Potential for Vetting: Some roles within the Partnership are subject to pre-employment vetting, which may include DBS checks and financial probity checks. Be prepared to complete these as part of the recruitment process.

This Procurement Manager role presents a compelling career advancement opportunity for experienced professionals looking to contribute to a well-respected and innovative organization. If you possess strong commercial acumen, a passion for supply chain excellence, and a desire to be part of an employee-owned business, this position warrants serious consideration.
