Job at Aston University in Birmingham, West Midlands, B4

Embark on a Rewarding Career in Student Wellbeing at Aston University

Aston University is extending an exciting invitation to accredited Psychotherapists and Counsellors who are passionate about fostering student well-being. This role presents a significant opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the lives of students within a supportive and dynamic academic environment. If you possess a Level 7 or Master's (MSc) qualification, a minimum of three years of post-qualification supervised practice, and current accreditation with a recognized professional body (BACP, UKCP/HPC, BABCP, or BPS), we encourage you to explore this position.

As a valued member of the Counselling Service, you will be instrumental in providing vital short-term, culturally competent therapeutic counselling. This typically involves up to six sessions, addressing a broad spectrum of student challenges, from common anxieties and depression to more complex issues such as trauma, self-harm, and the unique pressures of university life. You will collaborate with an experienced and enthusiastic team, delivering individual interventions, conducting thorough risk assessments, and responding adeptly to students in need.

Beyond individual counselling, this role offers the chance to proactively engage with the student community. You will have opportunities to lead well-being initiatives and support drop-in services, playing a crucial role in enhancing the overall student experience. The position is predominantly campus-based and requires a year-round commitment to meet current student demand.

Key Advantages for Potential Candidates:

  • Impactful Work: Make a tangible difference in the lives of students, supporting their academic success and personal growth during a critical period of their development.
  • Collaborative Environment: Become part of a well-established Counselling Service, integrated within a broader Student Wellbeing department and the larger Student Life directorate, fostering a holistic approach to student support.
  • Professional Development: Aston University is committed to offering excellent training and development opportunities, enabling you to enhance your skills and expand your expertise.
  • Generous Benefits: Enjoy a competitive salary package, a generous annual leave allowance (30 bookable days plus 13 bank holidays/closure days), everyday discounts, and supportive family-friendly policies. On-site gym and pool facilities with discounted staff membership are also available.
  • Vibrant Location: The university's central Birmingham location offers excellent transport links and access to a wide range of amenities.
  • Visa Sponsorship Potential: This role may be eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship, assessed upon shortlisting.

Key Considerations for Your Career Path:

  • Specialized Expertise: While general experience in brief counselling is essential, Aston University has a particular interest in candidates with expertise in Humanistic Integrative Psychotherapy/Counselling, with a strong focus on:
    • Rape and sexual abuse/violence
    • Trauma, loss, and bereavement
    • Self-harm and suicidal ideation
    • Cultural sensitivities
    • Spiritual and faith-based issues
  • Fast-Paced Environment: The role requires adaptability and resilience, similar to that found in higher education settings or other busy therapeutic contexts.
  • In-Person Delivery: This is primarily an on-campus role, demanding a consistent presence throughout the year.
  • DBS Check: A satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is a requirement for this position.

This is a truly excellent opportunity for a dedicated and experienced professional to advance their career while contributing to a vital service within a respected university. If you are looking to make a significant impact and are ready to embrace a challenging yet rewarding role, we welcome your application.
