Are you a driven and experienced engineering professional looking to make a significant impact on the future of rail transportation? Freightliner, the UK's leading maritime intermodal logistics operator and a prominent player in the UK Heavy Haul rail freight market, is seeking an ambitious ERTMS Project Engineer to spearhead a transformative initiative.

This is an exceptional opportunity to join a company at the forefront of technological advancement, playing a pivotal role in the integration of ETCS (European Train Control System) across Freightliner's extensive locomotive fleet. You will be instrumental in delivering cutting-edge programmes like the East Coast Digital Programme and future ETCS route upgrades, ensuring Freightliner's operations are not only compliant but also future-ready for the next generation of rail technology.

What Awaits You:

  • Pioneering Projects: Lead critical ETCS fitment projects, directly contributing to the safe, timely, and compliant integration of advanced signalling systems.
  • Industry Leadership: Collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders, including suppliers, industry partners, and colleagues across the programme and wider industry, to overcome complex engineering challenges.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as a key Subject Matter Expert on ETCS and high-integrity software standards, influencing decision-making at the highest levels.
  • Team Development: Lead a dedicated team of maintenance specialists, fostering their skills and ensuring the successful execution of project deliverables.
  • Strategic Influence: Represent Freightliner in crucial industry forums and working groups, shaping the future of rail technology.
  • Career Growth: Be part of an organisation that is committed to fostering your growth and providing developmental opportunities to help you reach your full potential.
  • Exceptional Benefits: Enjoy a competitive salary, a fantastic final-salary pension scheme, enhanced maternity & paternity pay, life assurance, and a range of lifestyle benefits designed to enhance your work-life balance.

Key Considerations for Your Career Path:

This role is ideal for an engineer with a robust background in rolling stock change projects and a solid understanding of traction and rolling stock systems. Your familiarity with ETCS standards, approval processes, and Putting into Use (PiU) responsibilities will be invaluable.

Candidates who possess:

  • A strong engineering foundation, preferably with experience in rolling stock change projects.
  • Familiarity with ETCS onboard systems and subsystems (bonus points for experience with CSM-REA application and compatibility approvals).
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills.
  • The ability to manage complex projects under pressure and make decisive, sound judgements.
  • A relevant degree or equivalent technical qualification (HNC/HND).

will find this opportunity particularly rewarding. The role offers a unique chance to gain hands-on experience with industry-leading technology and contribute to a significant national infrastructure project. This is more than just a job; it's an invitation to be at the vanguard of rail innovation, shaping the future of logistics and transportation in the UK and across Europe.

If you are ready to embrace a challenging and rewarding career, and you are committed to driving progress in the rail industry, we encourage you to explore this exciting opportunity.
