Job Description Engineering Manager – Irradiated Fuel Management (IFM) - Submarines Full Time Derby What you will be doing Rolls-Royce Submarines is part of an enterprise involved with delivering a range of strategically important programmes for the nation. An opportunity now exists to join the Irradiated Fuel Management (IFM) Programme as Engineering Manager. This is a leadership opportunity within the Vulcan and IFM Delivery Business Unit (DBU) direct reporting Head of Reactor Engineering, with dotted line reporting into the IFM Head of Programme. As Engineering Manager – IFM, you will be accountable for the management of the Irradiated Fuel Management (IFM) Engineering team. This team is in turn responsible for ensuring that the data (Post Irradiation Examination, Core Materials, etc.) required to underpin the Fleet Through Life Safety Case is delivered on time to ensure that Royal Nave Nuclear Submarines are kept at sea. This role has become available at a pivotal time in the IFM Programme. We are soon to embark on the first In-Cell PIE programme for over 30 years, including a failure investigation into a prototype core (the only one in the history of the UK Naval Nuclear programme) and gathering the data to underpin through life fleet safety justifications. You will be collaborating closely with the IFM project team to ensure on-time delivery of technical solutions which meet the needs of business. We work collaboratively primarily with the United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory (UKNNL) in Cumbria, Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment in Caithness to develop techniques as required and ensure the quality of this crucial data which underpins through life fleet operations. In addition, we work closely with the core design, physics, thermal and structural integrity groups within Future Programmes and key external organisations e.g. the Canadian National Laboratories for specialist test types. This position provides an ideal opportunity to develop your collaboration and technical understanding of core validation approaches and provides visibility across the business, Supply Chain and the MoD. Responsibilities Within this opportunity you will act as a prime Technical interface on behalf of the Irradiated Fuel Management (IFM) Programme, being responsible for: You’ll manage the safety aspects for all Technical elements of the IFM programme. You’ll be the prime Customer (UK Ministry of Defence) Technical interface; developing and maintaining excellent working relationships with the MoD technical and project leads. You’ll lead, manage and develop the IFM Engineering team, driving continuous improvements as a team and individually whilst ensuring that appropriate resources are deployed, directed and co-ordinated. You’ll ensure that the required capabilities are in place and fit for purpose to deliver on-time data in support of the Fleet Through Life Safety Case requirements. You’ll lead activities to improve and drive the timely delivery of data whilst maintaining full compliance with the company quality system. Why Rolls-Royce? To be successful in this role, you will need: To be a team player who is committed to working collaboratively with suppliers and customers (Internally and Externally) with a high degree of flexibility and willingness to provide support at remote locations as required. To be comfortable representing the IFM Engineering team, can challenge as appropriate and work across business units and functions. To have a Degree in an Engineering discipline (Preference Mechanical/Materials/Inspection/Manufacturing) although relevant experience of nuclear engineering/core components/technology development is considered considerably more valuable than the type of degree studied. To have some experience and understanding of PWR/Submarine core components, design, and manufacture. Ideally experience of developing/delivering inspection capabilities and collaborative working with the supply chain although this is not essential.
