Rolls-Royce Submarines, a world leader in nuclear propulsion, is offering an exciting 1-2 year secondment as an Engineering Safety Lead within the Submarines Production Alliance. This role presents a unique chance to contribute significantly to the safety and integrity of vital national defense assets, all while experiencing a dynamic and collaborative work environment.
What This Opportunity Offers:
As an Engineering Safety Lead, you will be a key player within the Platform Team, reporting directly to the Engineering Governance Manager. Your responsibilities will be diverse and impactful, focusing on ensuring the highest standards of safety are maintained throughout complex engineering projects. Key areas of focus include:
- Safety Management Plan: You will be instrumental in managing and continuously updating the Safety Management Plan, ensuring its ongoing alignment with project requirements and evolving best practices. This is a foundational element for maintaining robust safety protocols.
- Design Basis Management: Should the need arise from August 2025 onwards, you will take ownership of managing the Design Basis, a critical component that underpins the safety and functionality of the systems you support.
- Cat and Class Development: You will be responsible for managing the development of 'Cat and Class' designations, utilizing established defense standards such as DEFSTAN 02-207. This requires a meticulous approach to classification and adherence to stringent regulatory frameworks.
- Stakeholder Engagement or Defence in Depth: Depending on project priorities, your role may involve either the creation and management of the Stakeholder Management Plan, fostering crucial relationships, or the development and implementation of the Defence in Depth strategy, a vital layered approach to safety assurance.
- 1PA Management and GEAR Support: You will manage 1PA (likely referring to a specific internal process or system) and, as part of this, provide essential support to GEAR, contributing to broader organizational objectives and continuous improvement.
Key Considerations for Your Career Path:
This secondment is ideal for individuals who:
- Possess a Strong Engineering Foundation: A degree in Engineering or an equivalent qualification is generally expected, demonstrating a solid understanding of engineering principles.
- Value Experience: While direct experience in the specific domain is preferred, it is not a strict prerequisite. Rolls-Royce recognizes that transferable skills and a strong aptitude for safety can be equally valuable. The emphasis is on your ability to learn and apply your knowledge.
- Excel in Collaboration: Excellent communication and presentation skills are paramount. You will be working within a multidisciplinary environment, requiring the ability to articulate complex safety concepts clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences.
- Embrace Core Values: Rolls-Royce deeply values its principles: "Safety First, Do the Right Thing, Keep It Simple, and Make a Difference." Your alignment with these behaviors will be a key aspect of your assessment and integration into the team.
- Are Ready for Travel: A requirement for approximately one week of travel per month is integrated into this role. This offers opportunities to engage with different sites and stakeholders, enriching your professional experience.
- Meet Security Requirements: Due to the sensitive nature of the work, holding a Security Check clearance is mandatory. Rolls-Royce is committed to supporting eligible candidates through the application process if clearance is not already held. Please note that due to the nature of the work, this role is open to UK nationals or, in approved MoD cases, dual nationals.
