An Opportunity to Shape Adult Education in South West London: Become a College Governor at Richmond and Hillcroft Adult Community College (RHACC)

Richmond and Hillcroft Adult Community College (RHACC) stands as a beacon of adult learning in South West London, committed to empowering individuals and communities through education. Established in 2017, RHACC leverages shared expertise to provide tailored opportunities for adults to develop skills, thrive, and achieve their full potential. As the adult education provider of choice, the college boasts skilled educators and first-class facilities. We are currently seeking passionate and dedicated individuals to join our Board of Governors and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of adult education.

What is the Role of a Governor?

The Board of Governors is the strategic body responsible for determining the educational vision, character, and direction of RHACC. Governors are instrumental in approving the annual budget, capital investments, and the college's curriculum and quality strategies. As an employer of the college's staff and management, the Board holds significant responsibility. The Board typically comprises up to 17 members who serve as both company directors and charity trustees. Meetings are held five times a year, with additional opportunities for development and strategic focus. Governors are also expected to serve on at least one of the four committees: Audit, Finance and Resources, Quality and Standards, and Search and Governance.

Key Advantages for Potential Candidates:

  • Impactful Contribution: This is a unique chance to make a tangible difference in the lives of thousands of adult learners and contribute significantly to the vitality of your local community.
  • Leadership Development: Gain invaluable leadership experience by participating in strategic decision-making, board governance, and committee work. This is an opportunity for on-the-job professional development.
  • Enhanced Knowledge and Skills: Upskill and refresh your understanding of the educational landscape, particularly within the further education sector, in a dynamic and impactful environment.
  • Networking Opportunities: Collaborate with a diverse group of like-minded individuals, fostering professional connections and sharing knowledge within a forum dedicated to educational excellence.
  • Shaping Future Direction: Directly influence the future direction of RHACC, reflecting on key educational issues and their impact on the local community.

Key Considerations for Candidates:

  • Commitment: While the role is unpaid, a time commitment of approximately five hours per month is estimated, including attending Board and Committee meetings, and pre-reading materials.
  • Strategic Thinking: Governors must be able to set aside personal interests and make decisions in the best overall interest of the College, upholding principles of confidentiality and collective responsibility.
  • Ethical Standards: A strong understanding and adherence to the "Standards of Behaviour for those in public life" (Selflessness, Integrity, Objectivity, Accountability, Openness, Honesty, and Leadership) is essential.
  • Contribution to Discussions: Governors are expected to actively share knowledge, ideas, and enthusiasm, contributing constructively to Board and Committee discussions.
  • Diversity of Experience: RHACC actively seeks a Board membership that encompasses a wide variety of experiences and cultural backgrounds. While no specific qualification is required, the ability to bring a unique perspective is highly valued.

Career Path Relevance:

Becoming a College Governor is an exceptional opportunity for individuals looking to enhance their leadership portfolio, gain experience in organizational governance, and deepen their understanding of the non-profit and educational sectors. This role can significantly bolster your professional profile and offer a unique perspective that is highly valued in various senior leadership and strategic roles. It's a chance to contribute your expertise while simultaneously developing new competencies in a rewarding and influential capacity.

If you are driven by a passion for education and community development, and possess the commitment and skills to contribute to the strategic leadership of RHACC, we encourage you to explore this fulfilling opportunity.
