Job at SSE in Inverness, Highland Council

Opportunity: Lead Engineering Manager, Offshore AC Project Engineering

This is a pivotal opportunity for an experienced engineering leader to join SSEN Transmission and play a crucial role in delivering the UK's net-zero ambitions. As a Lead Engineering Manager within the Offshore AC Project Engineering team, you will be instrumental in driving forward critical "Island Projects" in Orkney, the Western Isles, and Shetland. These projects are at the forefront of connecting renewable energy sources to the national grid, utilising state-of-the-art AC grid control and stabilisation technology.

Key Advantages for Candidates:

  • Impactful Work: Contribute directly to the development of a network for Net Zero, facilitating the expansive growth of renewable energy generation in the North of Scotland. You'll be part of a company investing significantly in a cleaner, more secure energy future.
  • Significant Project Value: Lead and develop teams responsible for delivering innovative and value-adding engineering solutions across a portfolio of projects approaching £1 billion in value.
  • Leadership Development: This role offers a significant platform for leadership growth. You will manage and develop a team of Engineering Managers and Senior Engineers, fostering a culture of personal development, high performance, and continuous improvement.
  • Competitive Remuneration and Benefits: The role offers a highly attractive salary range of £78,400 - £117,600, coupled with a car or car allowance, performance-related bonus, and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your finances, wellbeing, and family. This includes discounts on private healthcare, gym memberships, wellbeing services like an online GP and counselling, and attractive family entitlements.
  • Flexible Working: SSEN Transmission embraces a "Flexible First" approach, offering options that can be discussed to support a healthy work-life balance.
  • Location Diversity: The role is based from one of four key Scottish locations: Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen, or Inverness, providing geographical choice within Scotland.

Key Considerations for Candidates:

  • Leadership Experience is Paramount: The description strongly emphasizes the need for proven experience in leading, developing, and managing high-performing engineering teams. A focus on innovation and continual improvement within these teams is a significant advantage.
  • Engineering Acumen: A qualification in a relevant engineering discipline is essential, with a preference for Fellow or Chartered Engineer status. Strong problem-solving abilities are critical for addressing complex engineering challenges.
  • Industry Knowledge: While direct experience within the Electrical Transmission sector is preferable, candidates with extensive experience from other relevant industries that involve large-scale project delivery and complex technical environments will be considered.
  • Communication and Influence: The ability to articulate expectations clearly to a large team, translate complex technical information for diverse stakeholders, and negotiate and influence effectively at all levels is a core requirement for this role.
  • Safety Focus: A commitment to promoting and managing safety in design, with a strong emphasis on continual improvement and compliance with relevant legislation (including CDM Principal Designer and Designer roles), is crucial.
  • Base Location Requirement: Candidates must be prepared to be based from one of the specified Scottish locations.

This Lead Engineering Manager position presents an exceptional career trajectory for individuals passionate about shaping the future of energy infrastructure. If you possess strong leadership skills, a robust engineering background, and a desire to make a tangible impact in the transition to net zero, this opportunity warrants serious consideration.
