Manufacturing Engineer - SSNA CRDM Producibility - Submarines

Job at Rolls-Royce in Derby, Derby

Manufacturing Engineer - SSNA CRDM Producibility (Submarines) - A Unique Opportunity in a Critical Sector

This Manufacturing Engineer role within Rolls-Royce Nuclear (Submarines) presents a compelling opportunity for individuals looking to make a significant impact on a project of national importance. As part of the SSN AUKUS initiative, this position offers a chance to shape the future of critical submarine components, specifically within the Primary Component Operations area, focusing on Control Rod Drive Mechanisms (CRDMs) and Core Furniture. This is a rare chance to influence both component design and manufacturing methodologies for a generation-defining program.

What You Will Be Doing:

As a Manufacturing Engineer in this role, you will be at the forefront of developing and implementing the manufacturing strategies for the new SSN AUKUS design. Your responsibilities will be diverse and impactful, including:

  • Generating Comprehensive Technical Packages: You will be responsible for creating all necessary documentation to support the manufacture of new SSN AUKUS components. This includes developing detailed Technical Instructions, Manufacturing Stage Drawings, and Production Routers.
  • Introducing New Products with a Quality Focus: You will play a key role in the introduction of new products into Primary Components. This involves leveraging robust quality tools such as Process Maps, Process Failure Mode Effect Analysis (PFMEA), and Control Plans to ensure built-in quality from the outset.
  • Driving Innovation in Manufacturing Processes: Where novel methods or processes are required, you will collaborate with the Capability Acquisition team to identify and implement innovative solutions, potentially bringing them in-house for greater control and expertise.
  • Cost Optimization and Profitability: A crucial aspect of this role is to control and reduce manufacturing costs. You will achieve this by continuously challenging existing methods of manufacture and Design Definition, driving efficiency and profitability within the factory.

Key Advantages for Your Career Path:

This position offers substantial career development opportunities, particularly for engineers seeking to deepen their expertise in high-stakes, complex manufacturing environments. The advantages include:

  • Strategic Influence: You will have the unique opportunity to influence the design and manufacturing processes of a cutting-edge, next-generation submarine program. This level of involvement is invaluable for career growth and recognition.
  • Exposure to Advanced Technologies: Working on the SSN AUKUS project means engaging with state-of-the-art technologies and engineering challenges, keeping your skills at the forefront of the industry.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: The role demands close collaboration with various teams, including Design and Capability Acquisition, fostering a rich learning environment and expanding your professional network.
  • Direct Impact on National Security: Contributing to the development and production of submarine components means directly supporting national defense capabilities, offering a strong sense of purpose and contribution.
  • Career Progression: Rolls-Royce is committed to employee development. This role provides a strong foundation for advancement within the Nuclear business, with potential to take on greater responsibility and leadership roles.

Key Considerations for Candidates:

To excel in this role and maximize your career benefits, consider the following:

  • Educational and Experience Foundation: A minimum UKHND/foundation degree or equivalent qualification is required. However, substantial relevant technical experience can also be considered. A detailed understanding of manufacturing processes such as Machining, Welding, NDE, Fabrication & Assembly, and Metrology is essential.
  • Manufacturing Systems Familiarity: While not always mandatory, a general awareness of manufacturing systems like NX, Teamcenter, CAPP, and SAP is highly beneficial and will expedite your integration into the team.
  • Existing Product Knowledge: Familiarity with the current product family, such as Dreadnought CRDMs, is a desirable attribute. Holding an ME stamp is also advantageous.
  • Professional Accreditation: National or international engineering accreditation (e.g., UK IEng or CEng) is considered desirable and can enhance your application.
  • Security Clearance: To work for Rolls-Royce Submarines, you must hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats. Rolls-Royce will support the application process if you do not currently possess this.
  • Nationality Requirements: Due to the sensitive nature of the work and the protection of certain assets, UK nationality is a requirement. Dual nationals will undergo additional scrutiny.
  • Alignment with Rolls-Royce Values: The company highly values agility, boldness, collaboration, and simplicity. Demonstrating these principles in your approach to work will be a key factor in your assessment.

This Manufacturing Engineer position is more than just a job; it's an invitation to be part of a groundbreaking project that will define future capabilities. If you are a proactive, skilled, and motivated manufacturing engineer looking for a challenging and rewarding career move, this opportunity at Rolls-Royce Nuclear is one you should seriously explore.
