AI Research Intern – Multi-Agent Systems and Reasoning

Introduction to Role

Our Summer Internship Programme offers undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students a unique opportunity to experience the impact of advanced AI within real-world scientific and research environments.

This internship sits within AstraZenecas data science and artificial intelligence research ecosystem, where advanced machine learning methods are explored to support complex scientific workflows. The role focuses on emerging multi-agent and agentic AI systems, a rapidly growing area at the intersection of machine learning, reasoning, and autonomous decision-making.

The intern will work alongside experienced AI researchers and engineers to explore how multiple AI agents can interact, reason, and collaborate to support complex tasks relevant to scientific discovery and enterprise workflows. The exact project direction will be shaped closer to the start of the programme, allowing flexibility based on the interns background and evolving research priorities.This role offers exposure to cutting-edge AI research, practical experimentation, and collaborative problem-solving in a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment.
AccountabilitiesDuring the internship, the successful candidate may:Explore and prototype concepts related to multi-agent AI systems, such as agent interaction, coordination, and task decomposition.Investigate reasoning, planning, or decision-making behaviours in agent-based AI systems.Support analysis of efficiency, scalability, or robustness in AI systems involving multiple interacting components.Contribute to exploratory research on topics such as memory mechanisms, uncertainty handling, or lightweight model orchestration, depending on project focus.Assist with designing simple experiments, evaluations, or simulations to understand agent behaviour.Document findings and present insights to technical colleagues at the end of the placement.The scope will be adjusted to match the interns skills and the programme duration.
Essential CriteriaCurrently undertaking an undergraduate, masters, or doctoral degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related discipline.Familiarity with machine learning or AI concepts, such as neural networks, optimisation, or algorithmic reasoning.Experience with programming, typically in Python (or similar languages), and basic software development practices.Interest in advanced AI topics such as agent-based systems, reasoning models, or autonomous systems.Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.Must have the right to work in the UK.Must return to education after the programme ends (students graduating before or during the programme are not eligible).
Desirable Criteria Prior exposure to multi-agent systems, reinforcement learning, or large language models.Experience with research projects, coursework, or open-source contributions related to AI or machine learning.Interest in applying AI to scientific, technical, or real-world problem domains.
