NDE Development Engineer - Submarines

Job at Rolls-Royce in Derby, Derby

NDE Development Engineer - Submarines: An Exciting Opportunity at the Forefront of Naval Technology

Rolls-Royce Submarines is seeking a highly motivated and skilled NDE Development Engineer to join their esteemed non-destructive testing group. This role offers a unique chance to contribute to the development of advanced inspection techniques essential for the UK's naval reactor plants. If you are passionate about cutting-edge technology, hold a strong technical background, and are eager to make a significant impact in a vital sector, this opportunity warrants your close consideration.

Why This Role is Compelling:

  • Pioneering Technology: You will be at the cutting edge of NDE development, working with state-of-the-art technologies including advanced automated ultrasonic, radiographic, and eddy current inspection, with a particular focus on phased array capabilities. This is an opportunity to shape the future of inspection in a highly critical field.
  • Mission-Critical Impact: As a technical authority to the UK Ministry of Defence for naval reactor plants, Rolls-Royce Submarines plays a crucial role in national security. Your work will directly contribute to the integrity and safety of these vital assets, offering a profound sense of purpose.
  • Career Growth & Development: Rolls-Royce is committed to investing in its people. You can expect an environment that fosters continuous learning, provides a platform for professional development, and offers access to a wide array of opportunities to advance your career within the organization.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Beyond a competitive salary, the role comes with excellent benefits, including bonus schemes, employee support assistance, and various employee discounts, reflecting a commitment to employee well-being.
  • Collaborative Environment: You will be part of a close-knit team that values technical excellence and customer satisfaction. This collaborative atmosphere, combined with the company's digital-first culture, provides a supportive and dynamic working environment.

Key Considerations for Aspiring Candidates:

  • Technical Expertise: A strong foundation in the design, development, justification, and application of high-integrity inspection techniques is paramount. Experience with European Network for Inspection and Qualification (ENIQ) methodology is highly desirable.
  • Relevant Industry Experience: While not strictly mandatory, experience gained in heavily regulated operations or industries requiring high levels of reliability and integrity will be a significant advantage.
  • Educational Background: A degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field is ideal.
  • NDT Qualifications: Professional qualifications in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), such as PCN, SNT, ASNT, MIPS, or GUIDE, are highly beneficial. Proficiency in UT, RT, and ET techniques is particularly sought after.
  • Automation & Equipment Familiarity: Experience with the operation of automated Ultrasonic & Eddy Current Testing systems, or similar, will be a strong asset, given the prevalence of encoded manual and automated equipment in inspections.
  • Security Clearance: A Security Check (SC) clearance without caveats is a mandatory requirement for this role. Rolls-Royce will support candidates in obtaining this clearance.
  • Nationality: Due to the sensitive nature of the work and the protection of certain assets, UK nationality is a requirement for this position. Dual nationals will undergo additional scrutiny.
  • Work Style: The ability to work effectively in a highly technical environment, collaborate within multidisciplinary teams, and meet tight deadlines is essential. The working pattern offers the opportunity to work in shifts, providing flexibility for those who thrive in such an environment.

This NDE Development Engineer position represents a significant career opportunity for individuals looking to contribute to a critical national infrastructure with a world-leading organization. It promises intellectual challenge, professional growth, and the chance to be part of a team dedicated to excellence and innovation.
