The Role of General Terminal Operative:

As a General Terminal Operative in Southampton, you will be an integral part of a fast-paced, dynamic team. This hands-on position supports both commercial and military operations, encompassing a range of critical tasks. You'll be directly involved in ensuring the smooth and safe movement of goods and the efficient operation of the port.

Key Responsibilities You'll Embrace:

  • Mastering vessel mooring duties, ensuring secure connections and effective fender management.
  • Safely loading, unloading, and securing diverse cargo, including specialized items like dangerous goods and helicopters.
  • Operating a variety of cargo handling equipment and ship’s gear with precision.
  • Performing essential Reefer duties and assisting with cargo recovery when needed.
  • Maintaining an unwavering commitment to safety, including working at height and in confined spaces.
  • Accurately completing cargo tallying and documentation using modern handheld devices.
  • Contributing to overall port operations, including housekeeping and maintenance tasks.
  • Delivering excellent customer service to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Adhering strictly to all relevant legislation, policies, and health & safety procedures.
  • Being adaptable and willing to undertake additional training and duties, such as rail driving or shunting.

Shift Pattern and Additional Considerations:

This is a full-time role requiring 40 hours per week, primarily Monday–Friday day shifts (06:00–18:00). Please note that night and weekend working will be necessary to meet operational demands.

As part of the recruitment process, all successful candidates will undergo pre-employment screening, including substance abuse screening and a medical examination. Adherence to ABP's zero-tolerance policy on substance abuse is expected. Successful candidates will also be subject to Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks.
