Technical Engineer Opportunity at Freightliner: Drive Quality and Reliability in a Leading Maritime Logistics Operator

Freightliner, the UK's largest maritime intermodal logistics operator and a prominent player in the UK Heavy Haul rail freight market, presents an exciting career opportunity for motivated professionals. Recently recognised as Rail Freight Company of the Year at the 2025 Multimodal Awards and proudly WORK180 endorsed for their commitment to diversity and a supportive work culture, Freightliner is seeking two Technical Engineers to join their new team at the locomotive depot in Crewe.

This role is central to enhancing the quality of maintenance practices for Freightliner's extensive locomotive fleet. If you are passionate about driving safety, delving into technical challenges, and contributing to the continuous improvement of a sophisticated operation, this could be the perfect next step in your career.

Advantages for Potential Candidates:

  • Impactful Role: You will play a crucial part in ensuring the highest standards of maintenance, directly influencing the reliability and safety of Freightliner's locomotives.
  • Career Progression: Freightliner is committed to fostering growth and offers considerable career progression opportunities within an award-winning team. This role provides a platform to develop your expertise and leadership skills.
  • Supportive Work Environment: As a WORK180 endorsed employer, Freightliner demonstrates a strong commitment to diversity and a positive, supportive culture for all employees.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Beyond competitive pay, candidates can expect a fantastic final-salary pension scheme, enhanced maternity and paternity pay, life assurance, and a range of other benefits designed to support work-life balance and provide cost savings.
  • Award-Winning Company: Join a company recognised for its excellence in the rail freight industry, offering a dynamic and stable career path.
  • Exposure to Advanced Logistics: This role offers a deep dive into the complexities of intermodal logistics and heavy haul rail freight, providing valuable experience in a critical sector.

Key Considerations for Your Career Path:

  • Location & Shift Pattern: The role is based at the Crewe depot and operates on a 4 on 4 off 12-hour day shift pattern. Candidates should ensure this schedule aligns with their personal and professional needs.
  • Technical Expertise: A strong foundation in locomotive or train maintenance is essential. Experience with Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) and/or Reliability-Centred Maintenance (RCM) environments will be highly advantageous.
  • Safety Focus: A deep commitment to developing and promoting safe working practices is paramount. You will be expected to be a safety influencer for your team and colleagues.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: The role involves technical investigations, fault analysis, and developing solutions to improve fleet reliability. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities are key.
  • Leadership Potential: While not a primary management role, the Technical Engineer directly supervises two Shift Technical Fitters and will be part of a second-line on-call roster, offering initial leadership and on-call experience.
  • Continuous Improvement Mindset: A drive to identify and implement improvements in processes and practices will be crucial for success in this role.
  • Pre-Employment Checks: Be aware that the position is subject to standard pre-employment checks, including references, safety-critical medicals, drug and alcohol screening, and DBS checks.

This is a significant opportunity for engineers looking to make a tangible impact within a leading logistics organisation. By focusing on quality, safety, and continuous improvement, you can build a rewarding and progressive career at Freightliner.
