Unlock Your Potential: Research Associate/Fellow in Advanced Integrated Motor Drive Technologies

Are you a visionary researcher eager to make a significant impact on the future of sustainable electrification? This is an exceptional opportunity to join a groundbreaking, EPSRC-funded £7m programme focused on revolutionizing electric motor drive technologies. In collaboration with leading teams from the Universities of Newcastle and Bristol, this initiative is at the forefront of radical innovation, aiming to drastically reduce energy wastage and manufacturing materials while simultaneously enhancing power-to-weight and power-to-volume ratios and extending product lifespan.

This role offers a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment where you will play a pivotal role in driving forward pioneering research in integrated electric motor drive technologies. Based at the prestigious Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) Research Institute within the Faculty of Engineering, you will have the chance to shape the direction of this ambitious programme.

What This Opportunity Offers You:

  • Lead Groundbreaking Research: You will have the autonomy and support to develop innovative modular power converter topologies and control strategies, conceiving and pursuing new research ideas that will define the next generation of electric motor drives.
  • Contribute to a High-Impact Programme: Become an integral part of a £7m EPSRC-funded initiative with substantial resources and a clear vision for sustainable electrification.
  • Collaborate with Elite Institutions: Work alongside and learn from distinguished researchers at the Universities of Newcastle and Bristol, fostering a rich and collaborative research ecosystem.
  • Career Development and Support: This role actively encourages and supports the creation and submission of innovative research development proposals and funding bids, providing a clear pathway for career progression and leadership.
  • Shape Research Direction: Your contributions will directly influence the future research trajectories within the renowned PEMC Research Institute.
  • Potential for Long-Term Engagement: While initially funded until December 31, 2028, there are potential options for extension, offering stability and the chance to see your work through to fruition.

Key Considerations for Your Career Path:

To thrive in this role, candidates should possess a strong foundation and demonstrable experience in:

  • Power Semiconductor Switching Converters: A deep understanding and practical application of these essential technologies.
  • FPGA Programming: Proficiency in programming Microsemi FPGAs within the Libero environment.
  • Embedded C++ Programming: Expertise in low-level embedded C++ programming for Infineon Tricore-based microcontrollers.
  • Power Converter Topologies: A comprehensive knowledge of various power converter designs and their applications.
  • Published Research: A proven track record of delivering high-quality research disseminated through peer-reviewed publications.

Beyond technical expertise, we are seeking individuals who are:

  • Highly Motivated and Proactive: A self-starter with a drive to achieve excellence.
  • Organized and Detail-Oriented: Exceptional organizational skills are crucial for managing research activities.
  • Collaborative and Team-Oriented: Experience working effectively with academics, researchers, PhD students, and diverse internal and external stakeholders on complex, multidisciplinary challenges is essential.
  • Forward-Thinking: A positive attitude and a passion for innovation will be key to success.
  • Mentorship Potential: Prior experience in co-supervising or mentoring PhD students is a desirable attribute, indicating a capacity to guide and develop emerging talent.

This is more than just a research position; it's an invitation to be at the vanguard of sustainable energy solutions. If you are ready to contribute to transformative research and advance your career in a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment, we encourage you to apply.
