Research Fellow - High Voltage Additive Manufacturing FP)

Job at University of Southampton in Southampton, Southampton, SO17

We are looking for a Research Fellow to join the Tony Davies High Voltage Laboratory (TDHVL) at our Highfield Campus to work on a new project on Additive Manufacturing for the High Voltage Industry. This project is part of the RIIO-2 Network Innovation Allowance (NIA), to work on innovative solutions to challenges the electrical transmission system faces. NIA projects enable the energy transition or support vulnerable customers, to drive forward an ambitious decarbonisation agenda in the UK.

You will be working with Dr Thomas Andritsch and Dr George Callender as well as our project partners from industry and academia on structure-property relations and ageing behaviour of 3D-printed solid materials suitable for high voltage applications. Materials manufactured this way have no track-record when it comes to long-term dielectric performance, and your work will assess the evolution of a number of key dielectric properties over 6 months of accelerated ageing tests in the TDHVL.

Join a multi-disciplinary team at the TDHVL that includes academic staff, postdoctoral researchers, engineers, PhD and undergraduate students. For further details on our laboratory, please see:

http://www.highvoltage.ecs.soton.ac.uk/

You should have or be working towards a PhD related to Electrical Engineering or EEE, ideally with experiences in High Voltage Engineering, or equivalent professional qualifications and work experience. It is vital that you demonstrate knowledge and understanding of one or more of the following subjects: high voltage engineering, dielectric materials, materials ageing processes, high voltage electrical testing, analytical and simulation techniques.

You will report to the funder at regular meetings, and be responsible for preparation of regular reports, publications and presentations at international conferences and project meetings.  You must demonstrate that you have managed multiple tasks to deadline while working in collaboration with others. The post includes meetings with the project team and industry partners. The post does not involve working outside of the UK for over 30 days in a row or over 90 days in a year.

The University holds an Athena SWAN silver award in recognition of its’ continued commitment to improving equality for women in science and engineering.  We will give due consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly including part-time and due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy, and onsite childcare facilities.

There are a great range of benefits that includes a contributory pension scheme; holiday entitlement of 30 days plus 8 bank holidays and 6 additional holidays (closure days); subsidised health and fitness facilities on-site; cycle to work scheme; a range of discounts which include restaurants, retail outlets and entertainment.

For further information please contact Dr Thomas Andritsch, email: t.andritsch@soton.ac.uk

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Closing Date: 11 Jun 2025

Section: Education, Research & Enterprise

Salary: £36,130 to £44,128 per annum Full Time Fixed Term for 12 months
