Research Fellow in Geometric Algebra Transformers for ISAC

Job at University of Surrey in Guildford, Surrey, GU2

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world - which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to make a real difference.

The role

The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS), home of the 6G Innovation Centre (6GIC), is looking to recruit a research fellow in PHYsics-based modelling towards Geometric Algebra Transformers for ISAC.

This exciting role will require the successful candidate to develop a physics-informed framework for reconstructing the electromagnetic environment (EME) using geometric algebra and statistical electromagnetics. The innovation lies in integrating electromagnetic channel models and geometric algebra to form a scalable, learnable, physics-based surrogate model for EME reconstruction. The outcome is expected to significantly reduce computational load and improve adaptability in ISAC systems.

ICS is the largest academic research institute in Europe specialising in all aspects of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies). It is home to over 200 researchers with expertise in all communication and broadcasting systems and has developed the best in class large scale testbeds for research and innovation and enjoys the state-of-the-art lab and computing facilities.

Established in 2012, 5GIC was the world’s first dedicated centre in researching end-to-end aspects of 5G and works closely with national and international leading academic institutes and key industrial partners. In November 2020, 6GIC was officially launched with parallel research undertaken in both 5G+ and 6G for 2030+.

About you

The successful candidate must have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in Electronics/AI Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics or other areas related to Electromagnetics Theory. Postdoctoral research would be an advantage.

The post holder will have authority over some aspects of project work and must be capable of providing academic judgement, offering original and creative thoughts and be able to interpret and analyse results.

The post holder must have:

Expertise in advanced theoretical and computational electromagnetics, including high frequency asymptotics.Expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning.Recent research experience in the development of first-principle wave models.Recent research experience in the development of numerical codes for complex electromagnetic scattering scenarios, and the use of full-wave commercial electromagnetics software.Good knowledge of the main standard channel models (e.g., 3GPP, IEEE)Strong research and analytical (mathematical) skills.Proven track record of innovation supported by publications in high ranked journals and conferences.Very good written and verbal communication skills.
