Research Fellow in Intervention Development to join the Big Data in Health Group

About usOur big data in health team at the University of Southampton is based in the Primary Care Research Centre. We are an interdisciplinary group focused on conducting innovative research to address the health and social care challenges of the 21st century, particularly in managing and preventing long-term conditions. Our work combines traditional statistical methods with advanced artificial intelligence algorithms to identify patterns in disease. We also use qualitative methods to understand lived experiences and explore the real-world implications of our findings. This informs the development of interventions and preventative strategies in the UK and internationally. We are seeking an Intervention Development Fellow with expertise in qualitative methods to join our team.

About the role

This position offers an opportunity to join a dynamic, interdisciplinary research group, working on various projects. You will collaborate closely with the team to deliver high-impact projects funded by the School for Primary Care Research (SPCR), National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), focusing on populations with multiple long-term conditions. You will contribute to a social care initiative, developing and testing an AI-informed digital tool to help individuals with multiple long-term conditions navigate their social care needs. The position is full-time fixed-term until 01/04/2026.

About youYou will hold a PhD or equivalent professional qualification and experience and have a proven track record in conducting qualitative research to inform intervention development. You will be skilled in applying methodologies such as the Person-Based Approach to design health behaviour change interventions. Your knowledge of health-related behaviour theories will be essential. You will have experience in recruitment, data collection, and thematic analysis, including focus group research and think-aloud studies. A strong interest in digital technologies and AI in health and social care research is also desired. Excellent interdisciplinary teamwork, time management, and organisational skills are required, as you’ll contribute to multiple projects across the group.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
