Rolls-Royce Submarines in Derby presents an exceptional opportunity for a motivated and skilled Safety Engineer to contribute to a critical and high-impact sector. This role is central to ensuring the safety and governance of new nuclear manufacturing facilities, a responsibility that underscores the vital nature of Rolls-Royce's work with the Royal Navy nuclear submarine fleet.

Why consider this role?

  • Pioneering Work: You'll be at the forefront of designing and developing propulsion systems for the UK's nuclear submarine fleet, a unique and significant contribution to national security and technological advancement.
  • Career Growth & Development: Rolls-Royce is committed to investing in its people. This role offers a platform for continuous learning, access to a wide array of development opportunities, and a supportive environment for career progression within a globally recognized organization.
  • Inclusive Culture: The company fosters a digital-first, inclusive culture where individuals are encouraged to be themselves. This environment values diverse perspectives, promoting respect and appreciation for all employees.
  • Competitive Package: Beyond a competitive salary, Rolls-Royce offers excellent benefits, including bonus schemes, employee support assistance, and discounts, demonstrating a commitment to employee well-being.
  • Flexible Working: The hybrid working model allows for a healthy work-life balance, with a blend of in-office collaboration and remote flexibility. The expectation is an average of three days per week in the office for crucial team interaction and project needs.

Key Responsibilities and What You'll Be Doing:

  • Safety Case Development: You will be instrumental in producing comprehensive Safety Cases for new Nuclear Manufacturing Facilities, adhering to an Inherent Safety and Defence in Depth approach.
  • Holistic Safety Integration: You will integrate cross-functional learning from Nuclear, Radiological, Environmental, and Process Safety Relevant Good Practice (RGP) to shape robust safety processes.
  • Hazard Analysis: Undertake multi-stage hazard studies and analyses to identify fault and consequence scenarios, developing effective engineered and administrative prevention and mitigation measures.
  • Design Collaboration: Work closely with design and project engineers to embed safety considerations from the initial stages of new facility design, ensuring a "Right First Time" approach.

What Rolls-Royce is Looking For:

Rolls-Royce values individuals who embody agility, boldness, collaboration, and simplicity. Beyond these core principles, candidates should possess:

  • A Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the capacity to produce clear, concise, and accurate technical reports.
  • Crucially, previous safety experience in the nuclear industry or other high-hazard industries is highly desirable.
  • Experience or knowledge of hazard identification techniques such as FMEAs, HAZOPs, Fault & Event Tree Analysis, and reliability evaluation methods.
  • Familiarity with hazard assessment processes, including design basis assessment techniques (e.g., production of fault schedules, derivation of safety functional requirements) and ALARP assessments.

Important Considerations for Candidates:

  • Security Clearance: This role requires successful application for and maintenance of Security Check (SC) clearance without caveats. Rolls-Royce will support this process for eligible candidates.
  • Nationality: Due to the sensitive nature of the work and asset protection, candidates must hold UK nationality. Dual nationals may be subject to additional scrutiny and background checks.

This Safety Engineer position at Rolls-Royce Submarines offers a compelling blend of challenging technical work, significant career development, and the opportunity to be part of a team at the forefront of critical national infrastructure.
